The second half of the story of Emolyn and her namesake Em. Thrilling moments are sure to happen as young Em and the Palmers move to Virginia for a new job, bringing them right to the center of the other characters that will bring about the final meetings and the exciting conclusion.
An interesting note of the view of slavery in the book...slaves are written as speaking with a dialect, but while they're portrayed as uneducated, they're not portrayed as villains of any crime, leaving all the crime to the privileged and the Irishwoman. I got a chuckle out of that subtle comparison, plus how both heroines had faithful black friends when all their other friends threw them over. Many old novels never portray black characters as the nobler race and I liked that undercurrent. Yes, there are terms used like “darky” but the characterization shows the author's heart.
