Masterful! That's the word most fitting of this book! A wonderful blend of lesser known fairy tales baked into a wonderful treat of a retelling. Barrison makes it clear that, like a chef, she knows what ingredients to use, how much, how long, and the appropriate temperature to cook it on, as well as the best tools for the job.
I started this book at 7 PM 2 nights ago and finished it the morning after. You care for these characters despite their somewhat creepy progression and dispositions. The tale strikes at your fears, but not in an overwhelming way. At times I found myself repulsed, yet I couldn't help wanting more.
All in all a fantastic display! Tuppence was intriguing, but Focaccia has me officially invested in this series of Fairy tale re-tellings! All I can say is E.S. Barrison needs to keep them coming! Very well done! Highly recommended for anyone seeking a real Brothers Grimm fairy tale retelling, but be warned this definitely isn't Disney.
I was provided an Arc from the author! All opinions are purely my own.
