Funny – I didn't realize this was a YA novel until after I read it. I just picked it up from the library returns shelf and the publisher's library classification was hidden under library stickers (funny as that is). But yeah – I did read it pretty quickly, and it was a really easy read what comes to language.
Not an easy topic, though. A Lithuanian family is woken up in the middle of the night in 1941 and given 20 minutes to pack things up before they are taken to the railroad station and packed into a train with hundreds of other people, to be shipped somewhere else. That ends up being a work camp in Altai, far in Siberia.
There's plenty of death and hopelessness, but also love, care, hope and survival. Very touching, while being somewhat light on the actual suffering (I guess that's where the YA shows).
