I loved the depth of this book and how it described so well the struggle to ranch and farm on the Canadian prairie in the early 1900s. George is a plucky fellow, but we don't see him thinking that...we see his actions and how he retains his humility and we are left to put the two together and draw our own conclusion about his character. He doesn't think twice about doing the right thing, but because he doesn't think that he has credit due him for that choice, he's not a goody two-shoes. I really liked him as a hero of a story and enjoyed watching the subtle development of him as a character and how he did his level best to make good on a difficult stretch of open prairie.
