I have read this book over 10 times in my life since I have gotten around when I was 13/14. My youth pastor's wife gave it to me to read when I was dealing with a lot and over the years it has always found a way to come back to me when I needed it the most. Even if I don't walk in the faith anymore the book still holds a spot in my heart.
This book shows the ugly side of life, especially in 1850. No matter how many times I've read it I still get sick and I still cry. Angel is a woman who was broken from the beginning. She has had to deal with the ugliest part of life. It seemed like every turn she made it was the wrong one. Then comes in Michael. Like any one of us he is a human, but he is also a stepping stone for Angel to finally be able to be who she is. It isn't easy and it is rough and ugly.
I suggest you go in with a neutral look into it. Forget the Christian aspect of it.
