I cannot rave about Survival Kit enough. I love this book. Haga gives us a married lesbian couple who have survived this apocalyptic world so far. What makes this amazing is that Kit is suffering from a neurodisease which impacts every area of her body, from pain to the touch, seizures, brain fog, exhaustion...see where I am going with this? Then there is another obstacle: Kit is in a wheelchair. Haga's own experience gives this story realism because you know if she wrote it, then Kit can actually do all of the things in the book. Holy sugar!!
Survival Kit starts with Shadia and Kit getting ready to leave their apartment to get to a safer place. First obstacle? No electricity which means no elevator, something they actually forgot to think about when planning their journey. No worries though because Shadia is an amazing wife and they get out of there. Their struggles have only just begun because the zombies are not the only bad guys out there.
Haga keeps the pace fast and at times harrowing. When I bragged about Shadia being amazing, wait until you meet Kit. Kit starts the story thinking that she will be a hindrance, but Kit has got badass inside her especially if you mess with her wife. This couple goes through hard times, but they support each other.
In between survival scenes, Haga provides us with information as to how the zombies appeared and how Kit originally got ill. This is illuminating and eerie especially with the times we are living in.
I will warn you that this is obviously a zombie story, therefore expect gore, blood, and death. Survival Kit is also a love story, a kick ass heroines tale, and a desperate action journey that leaves you holding your breath. I read this book in one sitting because I could not put it down. Did I say that I love this book? Oh yeah...sign me up for Haga's survival team!
I received an ARC of this book and I am writing a review without prejudice and voluntarily.
