The Bridges Of Madison County

I'm surprised how much I enjoyed this. My heart hurt for the two characters but also I was happy for them and what little time they did have. It took some adjustment for me due to it being an affair, and I was a bit surprised how accepting I was of it. The quietness of the love is what I think did it for me. In a world where 99% of the romance books are just thinly veiled smut, it was refreshing.

Do I really have to tell you why I hated this book? It is obvious, I think, to anyone who is more than a casual reader that this book is profoundly awful. Cardboard characters. Unlikely plot points. The only redeeming aspect of the book is apparently the real-life beauty of the real bridges of Madison County. I say, instead of reading this awful book, spend the three hours and go take a tour of the bridges themselves.

সিনেমাটা অনেকেই দেখেছেন। আমি এখনও দেখিনি, বইটাও পড়া ছিল না। মাত্র ১৭১ পৃষ্ঠার একটি নভেলা। বিষয়বস্তু : প্রেম।

প্রেমের উপন্যাস পড়তে কেমন যেন লাগে। গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কতো উপন্যাস পড়া বাকি এখনও, যেসব উপন্যাসে সামাজিক কিংবা মানবিক জটিলতাকে বিশ্লেষণ করে দেখানো হয়েছে। সেইসব “দরকারি” লেখা ছেড়ে প্রেমের উপন্যাস পড়ে সময় নষ্ট করবো?

তবু পড়লাম। পড়ে কিন্তু ভালো লাগলো। গল্পের প্রধান চরিত্ররা অল্পবয়েসি প্রেমিক-প্রেমিকা নয়। সংসারী এবং মধ্যবয়স্ক। প্রেমের মাঝে বিপত্তি তাই বেশি। দ্বন্দ্ব বেশি। গভীরতাও বেশি।

কাহিনির সারবস্তু দুই পৃষ্ঠাতেই লিখে ফেলা যেত। কিন্তু লেখকের রচনাশৈলী বেশ উপভোগ্য। তিনি ধীরে সুস্থে গল্পটা বলেছেন আমাদের। প্রেমের মতো জরুরি এবং অনিবার্য বিষয়ও আজকের দিনে “বাবু, খাইছো?” ঠাট্টায় পরিণত হয়েছে। ইট-চাপা ঘাসের মতো তবুও কয়েকদিন সূর্যালোকের স্পর্শ পেলেই, প্রেম এখনও, এত ঠাট্টা সত্ত্বেও, গাঢ় সবুজ হয়ে ওঠার ক্ষমতা রাখে।

বৃষ্টি নামলো যখন আমি উঠোন-পানে একাদৌড়ে গিয়ে ভেবেছিলাম তোমার পাবো দেখাহয়তো মেঘে-বৃষ্টিতে বা শিউলিগাছের তলেআজানুকেশ ভিজিয়ে নিচ্ছো আকাশ-ছেঁচা জলেকিন্তু তুমি নেই বাহিরে, অন্তরে মেঘ করেভারি ব্যাপক বৃষ্টি আমার বুকের মধ্যে ঝরে!
