Wilkie Collins's fifth novel, The Dead Secret explores the relationship between a fallen woman, her illegitimate daughter and the recovery of a hidden secret. Set in rugged Cornwall, the novel blends romance with Gothic drama, and in characterization and setting, clearly anticipates the qualities of Collins's next novel, The Woman in White.

Good classic mystery...to modern tastes, the secret might be a bit easy to guess, but I really enjoyed it. There was a dull spot about halfway in which made me lay it aside for a bit, but the ending was very good. I especially enjoyed Rosamond's relationship with her husband Lenny...their openness and honesty with each other would be good for all couples to imitate.
