At times the writing is almost brilliant and at others it is in need of editing, a problem which increases in the final quarter of the book. Sometimes the word choice is jarringly odd in places, and the end of the book has several glaringly misplaced or dangling modifiers that leave important sentences without real meaning. The plot twist at the end was too much of a surprise and contradicted things that had happened earlier in the book, as though the author came up with an ending without sufficient time to polish it. Hint to writers: never show the suspect committing the crime and later claim he had no hand in the wrongdoing, but there was another criminal all along!
Despite the problems, though, I really enjoyed the story. I'll probably even reread it several times. The romance in it is believable and pleasant, not overpowering.
