Allen Darcy isn't perfect. In fact, that's one of my favorite things about Hotchkiss's writing—heroes that are true to life. What he plans never happens, or at least for the greater portion of the book! The romance is very understated, which I also like.
Having only Allan's POV works very well for this sort of adventure, set in the early days of the Revolutionary War. He has to make some pretty desperate decisions, and sometimes they are doomed from the start, but we find out about it when he does. There are all sorts of desperate ventures; he gets into Boston just before Lexington, takes part in Bunker Hill, and does all sorts of other stuff within the space of a few weeks. The story is sure to absorb the interest of any lover of adventure!
