Finalist for the Inaugural Sue Grafton Memorial Award Maisie Dobbs—one of the most complex and admirable characters in contemporary fiction (Richmond Times Dispatch)—faces danger and intrigue on the home front during World War II. During the months following Britain’s declaration of war on Germany, Maisie Dobbs investigates the disappearance of a young apprentice working on a hush-hush government contract. As news of the plight of thousands of soldiers stranded on the beaches of France is gradually revealed to the general public, and the threat of invasion rises, another young man beloved by Maisie makes a terrible decision that will change his life forever. Maisie’s investigation leads her from the countryside of rural Hampshire to the web of wartime opportunism exploited by one of the London underworld’s most powerful men, in a case that serves as a reminder of the inextricable link between money and war. Yet when a final confrontation approaches, she must acknowledge the potential cost to her future—and the risk of destroying a dream she wants very much to become reality.

Maisie Dobbs always brings a bit of fun to a mystery, and this one was no different. If you have enjoyed the first few books in the series, you are going to love this one!
They just get better as the series progresses and the character becomes more defined.
Dive into the beginning of WWII, and a disappearance that will leave you wanting even more of the story!
This story has a mystery surrounding a young boy apprentice who cannot be located and of course, foul events are afoot. But what was more interesting is the stories that surround the regular characters including tying some of them to the events at Dunkirk. It seems that every book or so tends to focus on the characters and their lives while the other volume is more of the traditional mystery. At least that's how I remember them.
So, if you like Maisie, Billy, the cast of characters at Chelstone, this story will be particularly interesting to you.
Another great installment in the Maisie Dobbs series. The historical event the story pivots around is Dunkirk. Thought the storyline was plausible for Maisie (more than making up for the faults I found in #12). The only bit that had me scratching my head was the plot twist towards the end - which really has nothing to do with the main threads of the book - but it didn't detract from an otherwise strong addition to the series.
This is a series - not a group of stand alone books with the same main character - you really need to read them in order since each book builds on what came before it.
