An excellent tale...except that Coffin laid aside his usual shrewd skills of a historian and evinced a great deal of prejudice against the South. He called it the War of Rebellion and portrayed all Southerners with a broad brush of villainy. For instance, when the hero is at Andersonville, it is said that “they had been told the same thing [that they were to be exchanged] so many times, and had always been so cruelly deceived, that they did not believe the statement...” It is historical fact that the South hoped for exchange many a time, but that it was Lincoln's own decision not to exchange the prisoners.
Otherwise, a thrilling adventure of a young man who goes out to battle and wins through.
