This is my 2nd classic book read for the month of Nov. (First being “And Then There Were None”! I have seen both movies of “SHE”, 1935 version with Randolph Scott and the 1965 version with Peter Cushing! I liked both movie version and the book version is just as good. It is a bit slow for the 1st 50 pages but once the expedition starts the suspense and thrills begin. This is a fantasy/adventure novel.
SHE, the main character has found the fountain of youth! I won't tell you anymore, Read the book or rent one of the movies, I think you will enjoy!! David N.
Each month I'm trying to read 2 Classic books and 2 Award winning books. This book won the Edgar Award in 2016 for Best Novel. I was totally confused for the 1st 80 pages but started catching on and i can see why it won Best Novel. Half of the book takes place in 1936 and the other half in 1952 when the same characters in both time periods. The ending was a big surprise! Lots of folklore in this book. I'm glass I didn't give up on this too early, I'm really having good luck with the Award winning books and the author of this book also has another Best Novel award for an earlier book! Get this book and read it if you like good mysteries!! David N.
One of the very best books I've read this year! I'm trying to read 1 award winning book each month and this won the Agatha Award in 2017 for Best 1st Novel and I'm not surprised! This book has comedy, great characters, loads of surprises and clean language in it (though it would not have bother me if it didn't)! I'm 70 years old and sometimes had problems with initials they used instead of saying the whole sentence but caught on to it. This is the 1st book in a series and will be looking for book 2 next! If you like mystery, comedy & twists, then read this! David N.
For my classic read of the month I wanted something for Halloween. Of all the movies I've seen with Frankenstein in the title-None of them followed the book too well. No Igor or use of electricity in the book. Just 3 pages to describe the giving of life to the monster. Sentence structure was difficult at times but I know this was written in the early 1800s. This was still a good read! David N.
I seen most of the Dracula movies from the 30's to recently so I thought I'd read the book and see which movie version followed the book the best. The book was good, written in the late 18oo's it was a bit difficult to understand at times! I'm going to try and read 1 classic book each month and this was my 1st. As for the movies, I believe the 1992 version with Anthony Hopkins came the closest to the book! Great Halloween Read! David
Edgar Award Winner, Best Novel 2018! This was very good. Big surprise near end (Won't tell you), Great characters and locations. I see that Attica Locke has been nominated for different awards for her other novels, I'm putting her on my Favorite Author's List. If you like mysteries you should like this! David
I would have given this a 5 however I could not understand why 1 minute the main character was grieving because her sister was missing and the next day the main character was at an auction bidding on a house to restore. That really threw me. The author should have moved up the bidding for the house before the mystery start about her sister. The book has a few other characters who are involved in the mystery and some surprises also. I will probably try another of Colleen Coble's books in the future! - DN
I hope I have learned my lesson to stick with the “Mysteries, SF, Suspense Etc Genre”! If I start a book I always finish that book no matter how much I don't like it - I did so with this book and may change my habits from now on! Didn't like the ending at all, It kinda felt like the good guys lost at the end (I won't say what happen). I see that the book is listed as “Christian Fiction”, wish I had known that before I started reading it, just way tooo dull! You may like this book, Not me!! David N.
Not too bad of a thriller. Researchers stranded on an iceberg in arctic storm with no way off and no help coming! There was also an element of mystery in the book, I won't say what for new readers.
If you like suspense & thrills you will like this. I live in Alabama and the temp is 95 with 85 % humidity, good time to read this! David
This was a good one!!! A couple of good plot surprises, even one toward the last part of the book! I believe the 1st year of the “Bosch” TV Series is based somewhat on this novel! This is the 2nd M. Connelly book I've read this month and he has turned into one of my favorite authors! Read it, I think you will like it!! David
My 1st time reading this author. I come from up north and really had problems with some of the expressions and slang used in the book. It's a fast paced book and the characters were great!
A couple of surprises in the book made it even better. I can see why the author has won 2 Hugo awards!! I'm going to brush up on my Southern slang and look forward to reading another of his books! Read James Lee Burke if you haven't yet! David N.
The book was a bit on the boring side for the 1st 100 pages!! It started getting interesting once inside the court room. I was hoping there would be some twists and major surprises during the trial but that didn't happen until the verdict was decided. It was just an average read and I will probably not want to read any more of this author!! DN
This is the 1st Michael Connelly book I've read and was impressed! Good mystery with 1 major case and a couple of small cases thrown in also. The book didn't just stay on 1 case at a time but worked on each for a bit and switched off for a while onto another case, I liked that! Big surprise at end on the big case but I won't say what it is. I guess this is a new character that Connelly is introducing and I look forward to more “Renee Ballard”! I think you will like this book! DN
