The Summer Before the War

A great disappointment. How can a writer who is so witty and concise in Major Pettigrew be so long winded and predictable in her second book? I am afraid she took on too huge a task. Pettigrew was a much smaller tale, with way fewer characters, and it was not a historical novel, either. I hope the next book is smaller in scale, less like Jane Austen and more 2019.

The Year of the Flood

Could not finish this book by Atwood after the disappointment of Alias Grace. I had hoped for a worthy sequel to the exciting Oryx and Crake dystopia, but this is a dreary story. Flat and unintetesting characters and very little action. I gave up after 150 pages. No more Atwood for me.

Read the first 150 pages. Too predictable, and too shallow (characters, plot).

Could not keep my attention focused after the first half of the book. Abandoned at 3/4.I loved Black Eyed Susans, but this book is way less gripping.

Fantastisch feel good verhaal / cosy over een jonge vrouw in het spectrum. Geestig, goed geschreven. Kan niet wachten op deel drie.

4,5 stars. Not a masterpiece, but good. Light and fun. Fun perspective - through the autistic maids eyes. Neat plot.

The Maid's Secret

I love this series, that has an autistic young woman as the protagonist - without ever mentioning the word. It is a fairy tale / mystery / love story / feel good series. With lots of humor.

This paticular books ending was a little drawn out, but otherwise it was cleverly constructed. And the last one in the series, I suspect.

I listened to audiobooks, very well performed by Lauren Ambrose.

The God of the Woods

Fascinating crime story. Well written. Great characterisation. Great plot. A pretty serious book, no humor, but mesmerizing. I don’t think I have ever read anything like it.

I listened to an audiobook. It’s a little hard to get who’s who at first, because of multiple POV’s, but hang in there, after a while it gets better.

Three Days in June

This is a short novel. A mother of the bride - a typical Anne Tyler protagonist: full of doubt but not insecure - rethinks her own marriage and divorce. She is prompted by the unexpected arrival of her ex (plus cat) as a house guest. Laugh out loud funny at times. Warm.

A little disappointing after The God of the Woods. Drawn out too long. Lovely characters though.

Great storytelling, but his books always leave me feeling somewhat besmirched. Such love of capitalism and monarchy etc.
