WOW! That's about all I can say for this one. I hate to be like everyone else and say “If you liked Gone Girl...” but seriously, if you did, this is literally the only novel I've read since that I loved as much. Maybe even more. And even if you didn't like Gone Girl but love creepy, disturbing books, then this one will not disappoint.
I feel like there are very few mystery writers in the YA genre. Or perhaps I just haven't looked very hard? Either way, Karen McManus is amazing! I really enjoyed “One of us is lying” but her second book I LOVED. It has everything a mystery book should have and even though I probably should have seen it all coming, as usual I was blind and believed the characters were all good people. Of course, one of them had to be the killer. What a great read!
I think my expectations after all the hype over this book were just way too high. It did provide some good insights on the mind but I was hoping for more of a practical, “ways to avoid negative thinking” and actual concepts a person like me who overthinks every situation could put to practice. A lot of scripture and a lot of examples of the author's own life stories, some of which were helpful.
This book really spoke to me this holiday. As someone who gets a bit of seasonal depression during Winter, I struggle with the holidays. This book was not just about Christmas but more so about the traps we get ourselves in and how to trust God and have faith that everything will work out as He intended. So many pages I took pics of to read again to remind myself to let go of my past, to trust in the future plans He has for me and to better handle conflict in the coming year. He is the reason for this season! ❤️
I would have gladly given this book 5 stars but then we had to make it political. To me, this book should have been about the series and it's characters and the story line. And for the most part it was. The last chapter could have been left out entirely and this book would have been much more enjoyable. Too bad...
One of the first books that came across the reference desk when I started in 2006 at the library. It looked so intriguing I put it on my to-reads list. It took me twelve years to finally get around to reading it and while I wish I could say it did not disappoint... well... it did. The story was there, the characters were there, but the writing just didn't work for me. I'm not even sure I know who was who and who did what. But I see there's a movie so maybe within another twelve years, I'll watch it... maybe :)
I don't even know where to begin. Just read it. BUT, make sure you have book 2 readily available because you will want to keep reading. I fell in love with all the characters in this book. I don't even like young adult books typically which proves just how great this one is. Funny, romantic, and quirky.
A MUST read for all. Of course, I don't have book 2. So now, I wait...
Kristin Hannah has done it again! Love her books and this one did not disappoint. Some parts made me angry, others made me cry, and in the end, I was happy with the story. There were some parts that were a bit drawn out, but overall I think the reader needed those parts to understand Cora and Leni and everything they went through. I also learned that I would never survive in Alaska.
This story follows two brothers, Eli and Charlie Sisters on the road from Oregon City to a gold-mining claim outside Sacramento. They have been hired to kill Hermann Kermit Warm by their employer, the Commodore. Along the way, Eli decides he wants out of the hired assassin business and claims this to be his last job, while Charlie thinks his brother is an idiot and treats him as such. When they finally track down Warm, they must decide between following the Commodore's orders or going against him to secure their own future. Certainly not your typical western, but it is a humorous, at times tragic story of two brothers trying to survive the only way they can in the wild West.
