I really enjoyed this story about two lost souls trying to find their way in the world after tragic circumstances. I loved the premise that the author used to help these two heal. Lexie and Sam both have pasts they can't confront, yet together they find a way to mend each other and come back from these tragedies. Rather than sharing their entire lives all at once, the reader gets to hear one thing about each character. They share their “one thing” with the other every Monday at Sam's bar until everything has been revealed and they can finally begin to heal. Very neat story that will stick with me for a long time.
I've been struggling with stomach issues for almost a year now. It seems no matter what I eat, I get sick. This book has a lot of helpful information for anyone struggling with stomach problems. It discusses the most common food allergies, causes and has an in-depth explanation for just about every type of gut problem you can think of. This doctor seems to really know his stuff. The 28 day challenge looks tough but I might give it a go soon just to see if it helps. No dairy, no gluten, no sugar and no... coffee :( But if it helps me have a happy gut, it'll be worth it!
I highly recommend this book for anyone who is a leader in any setting. Lots of great advice, most of which I will be using in the future when leading my own teams. Great for coaches, employers, church leaders, anyone who leads. A few of my favorite take aways:
Positive leaders confront, transform, and remove negativity. Being positive won't guarantee you'll succeed but being negative will guarantee you won't. Page 70
As a leader, it starts with you. If you are complaining, you're not leading. If you are complaining, you are not showing your team the way forward... in dysfunctional negative cultures, leaders focus on the problems. In positive, high-performing cultures, leaders focus on solving problems. Page 81
When you feed the positive and weed the negative, you create an environment where you can do your best work as a leader. You can do what the truly great leaders do, and that's build unified and connected teams and great relationships. Page 84
“Leadership comes down to taking care of the people in your organization and making them the best they can be, not giving up on them and never failing to be there for them.” Pete Carroll. Page 100
Where there is a void in communication, negativity will fill it. Without great communication, negativity fills the void and it breeds and grows, resulting in negative contagious energy that quickly spreads. This is why communication is essential. It not only develops great relationships and trust, but it also prevents the spread of rumors and negative energy that can sabotage a team and organization. Page 106
It all comes down to caring. If you don't love, you don't care, and if you don't care, you won't make the time to unite, communicate, encourage, connect, commit, serve, or sacrifice. Positive leaders care about the people they lead. Page 128
Positive leaders lead with purpose. We don't get burned out because of what we do. We get burned out because we forget why we do it. Page 150
When you find the right book at exactly the right time. I so needed this today! So inspiring. I could and should listen to it every day. I feel like the author wrote it just for me. I worry about most of the things he mentioned. Very helpful and highly recommended for anyone who worries a lot or suffers from anxiety! I might have to buy it!
I started this knowing absolutely nothing about it. The audio is 42 hours long. The narrator was amazing. The story was well written and engaging. But I did not anticipate the cliff hanger. Forty two hours and that's the ending?!?!?! Why 5 stars? Because I laughed and I cried and I got mad. These qualities make a good book great. But that ending!!!! Ugh!!!!
Favorite quote from my favorite character (until the end anyway). Then I sort of hated him:
“Really Scarlett, I can't go all my life waiting to catch you between husbands.” Best proposal ever!
It started good and ended good but the middle... way too many characters for me. I just couldn't keep up with who was who, who did what, and... where was the plot? The only reason I gave it 3 stars is because of Fannie's depiction of the afterlife. I did find that a bit interesting. Had she focused on fewer characters, it might have kept my interest.
A must read for any teen! If only there weren't bullies in school, mean boys and girls who start nasty rumors for no reason. The result of those rumors can be life threatening and they don't even realize it. Teenage suicide is on the rise and we wonder why. This books explains it pretty well. A fictional account of something all too real in our society today. Don't be mean to your peers, don't start that nasty rumor, just be nice.
