I received this title early from Net Galley* I fell in love with this novel and it's characters. Rosen does a phenomenal job introducing each one into the story and the chapters flow perfectly. I'm a huge fan of books that bounce back and forth between characters but never have I seen an author use more than one characters point of view between chapters quite like this author. It made the story even better! While I adored all the characters, Allison and Jack(ie) were my favorites and I would love to hear the rest of their story. I give this one 5 stars. I will recommend it to everyone and my book club will be reading it in the near future!
This book took me 3 tries to finish. It is LONG, and much longer than it needed to be in my opinion. The beginning started out so, so promising, and while I did enjoy some parts of it, I found myself getting distracted while listening. So I'm sure I missed some parts? I just think a lot could have been taken out and it would have been a more enjoyable book, or maybe it just wasn't a book for me. If you want to hear an entire woman's life story, and I mean every. single. detail. of it, then this is a good book for you.
One of the best books I've read in a while! Absolutely stunning. Hooks you in from the first sentence to the last. Didn't want to put it down. It will leave me thinking for a long time about life and death and the decisions we make when we are out of our comfort zone. I found myself rooting for this family the entire time, I cried, I laughed, I fell in love with all of them. ❤️
I really enjoyed this one. I appreciate the author's honesty and so much of this book spoke to me, especially the parenting chapters. I always think I'm failing as a parent, but as the author says, the fact that you care and worry about failing as a parent only demonstrates what a great parent you are. Some parts were redundant and/or did not apply to me, but that doesn't make them bad, just not for me. It did make me sit down and think long and hard about my current life goals and moving forward, where I see myself in the years to come. I now have a list of new goals and accomplishments!
I loved this book! And I'm sure if it were written anonymously, all the negative stars wouldn't exist (if they even read it). Some people can't see past their party. Yes, there are some politics in this book but it's more about Tomi's life and how to fight for what you believe in. Say what you want about her, this girl stands her ground and fights for what she believes in. A few of my favorite quotes:
“Standing your ground is not always easy. However, when you do it over and over, it becomes the way that you are, and that adds to your confidence.”
“...Once you live without fear, it doesn't get much better. Do no harm, but take no shit!”
“When you've been dropped on your ass, don't sit in the corner and feel sorry for yourself. Square your shoulders and tell yourself that no one will get the better of you. You can be fragile like a flower or fragile like a bomb. The choice is yours!”
“...People are going to try to bait you, to get you angry. They want that part of your personality to come out. But don't respond. Mastering your ability to control your reactions is something I've been working on and something I suggest you work on, too. Take the long view. Have foresight.” ❤️#lifegoals
“Before you ask yourself why some people hate you, ask yourself why you give a damn. Worry less about who you might offend and pay more attention to who you might inspire.”
“Don't ever let anyone reduce you, because when you do, you give them power. And the truth is this: the reason they're saying you're not enough is that you're TOO enough and it scares them. That's their problem, not yours!” ❤️❤️
I wanted to love this book because I've loved every other book Leila has published and could not wait for this one. It was just... okay compared to her other titles and didn't have the wow factor I'm used to. Perhaps it was just bad timing for it, or maybe I need to pick it up and try again at a later date, but it just did not live up to my expectations of her novels. A lot of characters mixed with a lot of history so maybe it's just not my kind of book?
