I'm from IL and was so surprised that I had never heard of the Radium Girls...thinking back the only radium histories I knew were from the manhattan project and Marie Curie. I do plan to make a trip to Ottawa to visit the statue.
These women did so much with the time they had left, the fought an evil and corrupt company, fought for workers rights (especially those with hazard materials), and donated their bodies to science. We owe these girls a great debt.
Some of these portions had me in tears as I imagined their lives, their families, their devote husbands or people who took it upon themselves to be their champions against injustice. The authors note about wanting to do their best to tell their individual stories did a really great job capturing them and finding out about what they were like. I applaud her good efforts because I became captivated.
*note In historical fiction because it does do a narrative type of telling and I think this would be a great book to rec. for this kinda genre too.
People keep asking little bear “Can Bears Ski?” What could this mean? Little bear keeps this question on his mind as father bear investigates with a doc. about little bears hearing.
One thing I really like about this book also is how little bear feels the world and has multiple examples of how he navigates life by vibrations.
This is the first d/Deaf picture book i've seen and I'm really impressed with it. I feel this will connect with a child who is losing the ability to hear because of the childhood events that probably could happen to them like misinterpreting questions, being moved to the front of the class, and doctor visits.
Oooh this book is so fun! Join Earth and her day (spring is morning and winter is night) This was a really cool fantasy where Earth is personified and you can see her enjoy these elaborate nature scenes that flow nicely into each other. There is also cut out pages that show colors to the next...a lot of care was taken to illustrate and design this book. Awesome!
Milo is on his way to visit his mom, he has a drawing pad and is drawing the people and letting his imagination and coloring skill draw pictures of what he imagines his life might be...only to realize he's judging books by their covers. Slowly learning people's lives are complex and perhaps assuming the best may be better. The message and the book's story goes hand and hand so seamlessly, I thought about this book for the rest of the day.
Finding beauty in all hues of black skin. A family has a mixture of black skin tones from dark to lighter, everyone described beautifully. Sulwe has the darkest and gets made fun of for it. She is very sensitive and wishes to have light brown skin like her popular sister...Mother understands her feelings and tells her a fairy tale about the day and night sisters, in honor of their greatness her name means star!
Amy Wu draws her own dragon to share with the class, but it is not the same as everyone else's and she feels shy and unsure how to describe eastern style dragons (the class all draws/reads about western style dragons) she has some friends home and a relative helps them create a new dragon to share with the class the next day! Nice read about working together and introduction about different dragon types with activity in the back of the book.
Really great read...I was worried that this was going to be a supplement based book (like trying to sell them to you) but I was pleasantly surprised that even though it does have a supplement chapter the vibe of the book is to develop good sleep practices on your own and supplements temporary.
I thought the chapters where a good length and covered a lot of sleep tips well.
The illustration is so great in this <3
A kid gets treated to some red shoes - quickly becoming her favorite. She takes such pride and good care of the shoes that later they can be donated! There's a moment when you favorite clothes maybe are outgrown or maybe not loved in the same way - similar to the Marie Kondo cleaning method you can take a moment to appreciate you item - this story captures that feeling of thankfulness to an item perfectly.
It also shows that those shoes get picked up and loved again!

Peter Pan is some kind of boy-fae - gay, innocent, and heartless. Which is ultimately the theme of this whole book, you def. have some wholesome moments, like kids playing house vibe - lots of fantasy faire themes and ideas - and casual murder treated like a boyhood game...and not flat out murder. It has such a unique feeling and I would def. put it in with Alice in Wonderland and Wizard of Oz vibes...filled with wonder, scary moments/concepts, and perhaps a bit of truth or sadness.
Great read.

A kid gets gum in their hair and it just gets worse then there...kid keeps getting things/pets stuck in their hair, it's their birthday, but also it's picture day! The art style is really unique and I really love the dead-pan illustrations of the kid re-acting to the reader.
Mostly trying to get myself motivated in the morning and trying to find more meaning in continuing to try? Def. have some aspirations for myself that this book help elaborate.
The only thing these types of books don't really keep in mind sleeping disorders? BUT I feel like this book somewhat understood not everyone will have time/ability to wake up as early as they set up for...so at the end at chapters they have time poor/time rich suggestions
The illustrations and color pallete are incredible!The story reminds me of being a kid, although I would usually fall asleep right away, but I would have my imagination carry me away a lot of the time. I like the idea of parents trying to get the kid to bed but her imagination is too powerful and can not be put down! I generally like stories where creativity can't be stopped by norms and can blossom. It's so good to have a dog in the white house again...or really any animal~
It really shows that there is room in the president's heart if they have animals they truly love.
Cute illustrations, simple fun story...I WISH they had the in-dog-uration mention in this book but it does have a cool facts page in the back about past presidents and their white house animals.
This author/illustrator clearly has a great emotional intelligence and has a clear idea of how to portray emotions by illustrations and color choices. I truly hope they continue with these books. I first learned about John Lewis, not in school, but in his book [b:March: Book One 17346698 March Book One (March, #1) John Lewis https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1360539808l/17346698.SX50.jpg 24086771].Ever since John Lewis has truly been a champion in my eyes and I felt so sad when he died in 2020. I decided to read this for Black History Month when I saw it was available on overdrive. I learned he preached at a young age to chickens (he talked about it in the book also) and that's what this feels like, being in church hearing a passionate speaker talking about hardships, progress, and love. John Lewis captures you with his words and truly practices what he preaches. Get in that good trouble.

It was a little long for me, but I continued and learned a lot. Stacey Abrams is truly a champion for democracy! Let's continue to have fight for fair elections and get people out to vote ~
