I've skipped Vox Machina and started with the Mighty Nein~ BUT i'm so happy critical role is so well received to make something so splendid for me read because I just can not start something so long that isn't a one and done type of podcast/youtube situation. So, omg yes...this is beautiful.
This isn't really an exciting volume for me but I love the art and I know roughly where this story goes and judging from this first volume it's going to get really really good! This was a quality graphic novel and the art is so fucking rad.
Keeping my eyes on this for sure!
Reminds me of [b:Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me 29981020 Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me Mariko Tamaki https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1538848315l/29981020.SX50.jpg 50380585] in many factors. The LGBT+ themes, coming of age (relationships), and the soft colors being used. Great art in this book to tell the story of two young adults trying to find their way through life - what's holding them back, finding true friendships, revaluation, and honesty. ya know, coming of age stuffI rec. highly!
I was surprised to find this kinda an epic story telling - I didn't anticipate it to get dark but it went there more times than I expected, which was cool. I see a lot of middle graders read this and I think it's great for their age. It reminds me a lot of the amulet series. [b:The Stonekeeper 1238684 The Stonekeeper (Amulet, #1) Kazu Kibuishi https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1327866356l/1238684.SX50.jpg 1384641] I like the bone cousins and the story is really nice fantasy. Even though I read all of them consequentially sometimes things seemed to skip around? The world building was good enough to make me want more. Has an interesting art style, which sometimes works and sometimes clashes - especially next to a human character. Ultimately, I really enjoyed this! After reading Rose in the series, a prequel with the grandma, I was really craving the watercolor artstyle really blew up the fantasy element - fairy tale feeling- and I felt kinda robbed the whole series wasn't in that style. The Rose tale was actually my favorite book in the series. If you happened to give up on bone, just skip to Rose cause it's on the next level imo.
I love how this universe of stories continues to expand! The story is relaxing, fun, and cute! The art style is charming ~ a nice slice of life! I really hope this series continues ( I secretly hope for a movie!) There are a few other books by Katie O'Neill and they are all really great reads.
I especially love the ASL used in this story and how you can see the signs being used in some panels. In a few panels I can tell some signs like “want” and “help” are clearly being used.
One of those victorian tales that has such an interesting fantasy element - maybe fairy tale aspect - but it really written to be sensual? It's not strongly one or the other, which kinda just ended up being creepy to me? I did enjoy reading a summary at the end that takes about the early feminist aspects of this tale about sisterhood and not being “ruined” or cast out by a sexual experience.
Fun times for halloween! We got a different illustrated version from what I read growing up as a kid- Half of the reason this book is scary is the original illustrations imo
Anyway, Tim and I read these out loud - first we tried to be serious about them...then we just kinda got silly about it and it was a lot of fun. They're the perfect length and scare factor for a J level read for sure.
My favorite one, that scared me as a kid and carried it's way into adulthood was “The Highbeams” Where a teen gets into her car after an event and gets followed by a truck. This truck would occasionally blast his highbeams filling her car with light. This one scares me because as a kid it was so grounded in reality and as an adult seems like too real of a possibility.
Fun read! I think I'll read the next book for halloween!
I've been listening to the my fav. Murder podcast for the past year and love it. If you read this book I can not suggest enough that you get the audiobook narrated by our murder podcast favs themselves!
I didnt know what this book was about when i got it from the library, besides i needed book club spooky read and it was from my podcast i listen to. It's more of a memoir, i was imagining a witty sarcastic tips of how to stay sexy and also not get murdered. Tips on life, makeup, and real examples of fuck politness so youd not get murdered.
Still pretty good memoir/bio read! I enjoyed listening to it.
If you are having feelings of suicide - find a better book.
Here's what I liked... The audiobook narration.
At first I thought this was an interesting premise, despite the dark tone to it...that ends up being an empty story.
We have it viewed through clay (who has no reason to be on the list????) Who likes her and is sympathetic to her. At first I thought he was trying to have some self deniability or him being a nice guy(tm) - nah! He is nice and has no reason to listen to these tapes.
So, these set of tapes have some people who don't need to be on them? It's just a self fulfilling prophecy at some point, passing the blame on to everyone but her. Hannah doesn't really have a great perspective about other peoples lives - such as clay.. Who left her alone ,after having a wonderful moment , because she yelled at him who didn't do anything wrong now has to listen to these tapes. One of her ex-friends was black out drunk at a party - raped - as her date let him do it and she was hiding in the closet. could you imagine, you may have no memory of that night...or remember that night knowing more circumstances and hannah is STILL like poor me your one of the reasons i'm dead - you still gave her this tape? how heartless. How about that girl who hit a stop sign after taking hannah home after her events at a party, hannah freaked out at her, she was probably already freaked out. she's a teenager who got into an accident, stayed out late at a party, has no money to pay to fix this problem...she probably has to tell the parents who we don't know what the relationship with them is THEN finds out later there was another accident that in a stretch was responsible in a way for (It IS a stretch, like it's still not her fault.) now i'm sure she thinks about often....why is she on the tape?
Don't get me wrong some people deserve to be called out....but NOTHING comes of this. They don't get any jail time or what they deserve. nothing. You never hear anything else from the other characters.
This ultimately didn't work for me for several other reasons. This book is not a graceful way to tackle the subject of suicide. And Hannah was such an unlikable and annoying character, it was hard to be sympathetic even when looking to be. Even kinda glorifies the idea with going off with a bang...although not realizing that you didn't do anything to go off with a bang. You didn't confront anyone, attempt to bring some to justice, reach out for your self, and not realizing the destruction you'll leave in your wake to other people that also have lives you don't understand. In this point- this book might make a good talking point.
What could make this better? Maybe another book in the series with reactions from the other characters on the tapes? You never hear from them ever. I'd like their reactions to listening to the tapes- would speak more volumes then Clay. It would broaden Hannah as a character...a victim, a bully, a hero. Her tapes could be used to serve justice.
I liked this. One thing that I liked was right away- Her mom dies and she looses her memory in a car crash...it's kinda cliche BUT when you see the car that struck them goes off unharmed really immediately puts you into a strange/eerie/mystery vibes, it's a nice spin. The story is more casual as Raven puts together her memory and starts to recognize her powers. Looking forward to reading Beast Boy...I feel this story can only get better and better! Lots of places to go!
Ok, imagine a 3 headed witch goddess and turns wonder woman into a hag! Sounds great? Yes, it's super great and this book does a very meh job of it. All the elements are there but it's not long enough or they spend too much time concentrating on b team magic justice league.
I understand I missed the 1st volume...I feel with come changes this could have been an amazing one shot!
Here's what I wanted to see.
1) more of a relationship with the witch goddess - what's her deal? A clearer message or maybe a different one...Maybe the empowering of women? 3 Heads so maybe each has a goal in mind? The maiden is good, the croon is evil, the other a mystery - or combo of both.
2) spend more time with the chosen witch characters - Wonder woman, black orchid, the fire witch, and the others (I forgot) I'd like to know their deal and also the covens.
3) no justice league b.
An ok read, good art, amazing hag wonder woman really is what worked for me.
Going through this and AHH I didn't expect to see 3.5 art in here. I looked on the back to see the wizards logo and such. Really is a fun book, especially for littles who like monsters/fantasy I think would enjoy this especially. It also has some really nice lair/hangouts that could be useful for dm reference for later. ;)
I stopped at disk 5, the narrator was fine.
Omg, these kids are awful. Kendra is suppose to be lawful and seth chaotic and none of them come together in a way that was likable. Either have them bicker to a compromise and then have the thing happen in the plot or have just 1 character so we can know their mindset. Seth gets it hard as the chaotic one causing the troible but also feels no remorse... kendra does nothing to actually stop him (dont open that window to the fey on middsummer night or ill tell grampa TOMORROW”
Grandpas does no explaining or actually teach them until the thing already happen, is happening, or about to happen.
The story i found to be choppy or boring and i see that these disks are unabridged....if there is an abridged version get that one.
