This is a graphic novel with no dialogue. I'm always like when a story can be told by images alone because it gives room for a lot of interpretation. There is a strong relationship story being told through this book.If you like this you might also enjoy [b:The Arrival 920607 The Arrival Shaun Tan https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1312827620l/920607.SX50.jpg 905641] or [b:Cicada 39983607 Cicada Shaun Tan https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1527485143l/39983607.SX50.jpg 61906497]~Ashley

If you are a person who is uncomfortable talking about money, like real life mistakes and experiences, then Gaby feels like a friend. I feel like she is a candid person to tell you honest and true advise and stories about money, all on the table, this is the book for you! Although, I would definitely recommend a personal finance book if you're looking for just the bits and not the conversation.

I'm already familiar with her podcast and this book wasn't what I was expecting? I wanted more bits...Still interesting and she reads very well on paper - her voice radiates!
Honestly, I like her format better as a podcast- oh, maybe this would make a great audiobook! Anyway, I can't recommend her podcast enough! The book is just a bonus~

I love this, the illustrations are great and the pride she takes with the women in her life and how uniquely they are and wear their hijabs is such a lovely message. Really the colors are terrific, does a nice everyday slice of life style, and the characters in this book feel genuine. This book captures well the feeling of how a young child looks up to the people around them. ~Ashley

This reminds me of another book called Mommy's Khimar.

Did anyone get a Pigpen as a ghost vibe when reading this book?

This is about a girl who hates ghosts and laundry. This book has a character who lost her mother, is lonely, runs her own business to support her family, AND is being harassed by some snob to sell it to him. This seems like the slice of life I would tend to enjoy with a paranormal/fantasy element, although something was missing for me here. I wanted more pages to this book give me more with the characters.

The art is nice in this book and the color pallet for the panels is so lovely! Great read for the beginning of Oct! ~Ashley

If you liked this I recommend Ghosts by Raina Telgemeier

This is more of a 3.5 star for me, I couldn't decide how to mark it.

First, this book is a parody of Marlon Bundo's Day in the Life of the Vice President and was prompted by John Oliver on Last Week Tonight, check out the video if you are curious.
I love how vibrant and expressive the illustrations are, nice follow-able story, and messages about love and voting!
This book was recently added to the banned book list for 2018 and we enjoy the celebration of reading! Check this book out for yourself! ~Ashley

Horror book? Check! Has Yokai? Check! Graphic novel? Check!
It had a so many things going for it for me and it just missed it's mark. Maybe because the short stories were not long enough to get me fully invested. I can not put my finger on it exactly. My favorite story out of all of them was the “Salty Horses”. Nice, creepy, and the horses reminded me more of a nightmare. Still this is short so give this a try! ~Ashley

There is so much of this story that grabbed me as soon as that solider called a tiger “Your Majesty” I wanted to know what this beautifully illustrated story was about. There are some great things put in here, some magical place, some magical animals that may or may not be people, some kinda spirit guide/yoda character, kingdoms, marriage to unite kingdoms, and a relationship between a solider and a queen. It has so many interesting things going for it and yet none of it is set up to be interesting. The story of this book isn't very smooth and the flow just isn't there. There isn't any character development or relationships SHOWN, just told, so it's hard to connect and care.

!!BUT!!! I felt reading this book and it's amazing illustrations was 100% worth it. It really got my imagination going and I hope to continue reading this story! ~Ashley

Cute story, cute illustrations, and wonderful color palette. If you're looking for a short graphic novel that is cute and is a bit of fun I would go for this one. Not really anything substantial, but I wouldn't mind seeing more. ~Ashley

I wonderful introduction to sadness and its shifting relationship. I really enjoy the color palette in this book, the repeating colors make sadness a part of everything, even in something beautiful like the flowers outside. This is an excellent book to help kids understand their feelings, especially a strong emotion like sadness, that can come and go in different lengths of time. Excellent read, fantastic illustrations, I highly recommend! ~Ashley

Ok, the poem “The Proper Way to Meet a Hedgehog” is 100% how to greet a hedgehog. They really nailed their shy personality. ~Anyway, I really enjoyed the illustrations and the rest of this book. I really liked several of the poems in here and it really gave a unique feeling when reading them or really capturing the essence of something or feeling. I would highly recommend this book! ~Ashley

I remember this book fondly as a kid, I like the survival aspect and burning a $20 bill to help make a fire was pretty mind blowing in 5th grade. Having to re-learn things that are easy in society to survive was really interesting. That being said, this story held up well to my nostalgia goggles, the story is still compelling and short enough to hold my attention all the way through. I listen to this on audiobook and maybe I shouldn't have. The writing style is very repetitive, to the point it was driving me nuts! This book could have been a little shorter if he didn't re-phrase everything! I would like it at some points for emphasis on Brian's thoughts, but it was a constant through out the book.

Heavily illustrated by the fabulous Brian Selznick it really has a nice layout and flow that goes really well with the story. A historical fiction about a box finding Houdini's box - extra info at the end of the book

Heard it gets better as it continues. Interesting premise, good precise descriptions until you get to any female character than it's a page of sexual nonsense. Hard to tell if it's the character or author, will probably continue this series at some point

A short read, which doesn't make it any less of a master piece. A story set in 1920's. It's about a mysterious man, Gatsby, Who throws a parties every night that he never attends. His neighbor becomes good friends with and gets to know Gatsby. This book has amazing themes but the best has to be dissatisfaction, which is a driving force of why Gatsby was so successful among other things. I have read this book a few times and each time is has been though provoking to me

A mentally disabled man never stops searching for knowledge and an experiment may just be his answer. This book is very emotional. The text in this book is thoughtfully crafted and really pulls you into the character and his progress through his quest for intelligence.

This was my first romance genre book. For a romance book this was pretty tame, the book itself kinda makes comments how it's pg13 level content. My favorite troupe was going on here, where the characters are competitive with each other, but don't want other people to know. So on the outside they are very polite and maybe friendly with each other, on the inside and when alone is when things get heated. Then start to bond and fall in love with each other!
So, has my favorite troupe (points!) but the characters are very flat. They make a point to make sure you know how different they are! One's conservative men's rights white boy and the other is a liberal grew up financial broke family feminist...although, this really doesn't matter AT ALL! None of the character go through much character development, I'm especially not impressed with Payton being a feminist type character and having no issue or question of ethics defending a company with a giant sexual discrimination/harassment (i can't remember which one) filed against them. This would be a perfect time for Payton to question staying with a firm that can offer her partnership, even if it's against something she stands for and for J.D. to shed some light on his misogynist views and see how it affects women and maybe even Payton's career. They would do some bonding and start their own law firm...nah, too complicated. Let's just make it solely about them.
This was my first romantic genre book, def. had some fun moments that made it readable. I would be interested in trying this genre again! ~Ashley

We follow the day to day of the life of a black family in Chicago around 1950's. This story is a beautiful and complex masterpiece. I learned in my english class that the title is a poem Harlem by Langston Hughes Follow the ups and downs of this family and if you ever have the chance of seeing this performed as a play I STRONGLY recommend it! If you don't have a chance to see it performed I will recommend the audio book. The audio book I listened to had a full cast performance that was brilliant. ~Ashley

If you like to compare pieces of fiction I suggest you read The Glass Menagerie These books are very similar slice of dysfunctional family life. Both are run by a matriarchy, both have an absent husband, both families struggle with finance, and both have a male character who wishes for so much more. If I could run a book club these would be the first two books to discuss side by side.
