Loved it. Probably would go 4.5 stars if I wanted to be picky. I predicted some stuff, but as with a good thriller, you predict 40 things and some of them come true lol and are you REALLY ever sure until it's finally revealed to you? No, not usually. Good stuff. Great debut novel. Looking forward to her newest one now!
What a fantastic book! I loved every part from start to finish. They writing was clever and superb. The main character and how he was written and how he talked to us, the reader, I really loved. And how he was writing a book about all that happened in this book we're reading. The humor was great. The story was first class. The twists and revelations were welcome and mind blowing. Really just a great book overall!
Wow! What a book! What a ride! That was a tightly written book, packing in a lot of exciting and unpredictable twists and turns. It left me predicting so many other twists that wouldn't ultimately happen, and I love when that happens. When you're like, “omg! That kiss is gonna be laced with poison!” And then it's not lol the characters were great, the plot was great. I am a sucker for trapped in a place during a snowstorm type books! And of course whodunnit books. Thriller books. Books about writers. It just ticked all the boxes to be honest. I even got a little sad at the end with some of the resolutions. And it DID completely resolve and I LOVE that! Give me an ending. Hand it to me. Spoon feed it to me please and thank you. Loved it.
Ooo boy I loved this dark, tense, atmospheric horror/mystery/thriller kind of genre-bending book! I read it in chunks and though I supposed one could call it a slow burn if you wanted to, I hate slow burns and this one didn't feel like it. It just ratcheted up the creepy and the tension one small chapter at a time. And yes, folks, I said SMALL CHAPTER! My absolute favorite kind of book is one where the chapters are small. Keeps me reading “just one more chapter” and I definitely read faster when the chapters are small.
This was also told from the perspective of four different people, the four members of the Parrish family: Ezra, Poppy, Leo, and Lark. Loved that too. Multiple perspectives don't always work, but they did here. I don't want to give too much away but I will say it's my favorite kind of horror in that it's humans doing bad things to humans, and not paranormal or supernatural! So I was a very happy camper!
This one gets five stars from me! Even tho there's one teeny tiny part of the ending that I'm a tad perplexed on that I'd love to discuss with someone!
Another stunner from Shari LaPena! She does know how to write an absolutely wicked domestic thriller! This one was especially good. Red herrings abound. Who the F actually did it?! I had guessed every suspect and even some of the non standard suspects throughout the book. I was very happy with the ending too! Just delicious! If you haven't read Shari's books and you love thrillers, what the hell are you waiting for?!
Wow. I read for over 5 hours straight today to read about the last 75% of this book! I haven't done that in quite a while. I absolutely loved this book. Amazing pacing. Believable characters. Some very tense moments. Great twists. I will definitely be recommending this book to everyone! I love Jason's other book, The Impossible Fortress, and I love this one even more!
Fantastic new novella from one of my favorites! Have loved everything she's put out so far and this one is different than any of the other and still just as fantastic! Lilly is a beautiful human. Rain a possibly even more beautiful human. And the dad a very flawed human ☹️ I can't say I'd be the same as this dad, cause I know I would be more supportive and loving, but his character is an essentially flawed human trying his best. Lovely story with a fable feel to it.
This book was practically utter perfection. Dave Grohl is one of those one in a million guys. One in a billion even. I'm convinced the man handles everything in life perfectly. I'm sure he doesn't, no one can, but he has to be close. He is the Keanu Reeves of music and Keanu is the Dave Grohl of movies.
This book is charming, funny, caring, emotional, intellectual, fast, slow, endearing. How many adjectives could I find? I could find more if I needed to. Talk about a man who knows himself, who knows life, who walks through life with humility, humbleness, and the emotional intelligence of a god damn saint.
I don't know what else to say, his stories are everything. His life has been legendary so far. If you love the Food Fighters or Dave Grohl, or Nirvana, or any combination of those then this book is for you.
Daaaaamn. This book was intense and rollercoaster and downright amazing! Volpe killed it with this one. It's emotional and scary and hard to take but also unputdownable! It does almost feel like a beginning, a very different middle, and then the end, but it also didn't bother me at all. There was another book that did that and I didn't care for it, but this one was done well and done for a good reason and it works.
I know Volpe is know for his extreme horror (I haven't read any of his other books) but this is not that. There are extreme parts, but they're very few and far between. So, if you don't want to read extreme horror, then this book will be ok for you and not bother you!
It's my first read of the year and I know it'll already be one of my favorite reads of the whole year!
Really a solid collection! Only a couple I didn't care for, and those were more towards the middle. The beginning stories were great, and the last three were stellar. My favorite of all the stories being Yankee Swap by John McIlveen! Wow, really one of the better short stories I've read in a long time! Bravo! And I haven't heard of that author before, so that's exciting as well. Another big standout is The Hangman's Bride by Sara Pinborough. I DO know her, but haven't read any of her books. And the one of the last three I haven't mentioned yet is Hiking Through by Michael Koryta, another author I've heard of but not read, and it was really a fantastic story as well!
A really lovely short story again from Jeremy Ray. This one deals with grief, which is so real to so many of us. Grief from a loved ones passing. This one hit me especially hard as I lost my mother just over a year ago. I'm very happy to be on Jeremy's list of ARC readers and I've given five stars to each of the three of his stories I've read since I started with Petrified Woman. I love that he doesn't stick to one genre and I like skipping around the genres with him as I need to go out of my comfort genres more often! Thank you, Jeremy!
If it's possible, I loved it even more this second time than I did the first time! I took my time, enjoyed it, savored it, appreciated it. The world is rich, the characters full and real. My only criticism, which I had the first time I read it but couldn't put into words then, is that I wanted more from the end of The Prophet. It was underwhelming the first time, and was this time was well. But that's a small criticism as I enjoy every other part of this book and I DO still enjoy the HOW of The Prophet's ending.
To me, I've discovered as I ended this book the past couple days, that this book feels like a good friend. Like I could return to it again in a few years and enjoy it and appreciate it all over again. It's comforting. Just a beautiful book. Can't wait to see how HBO Max does with the adapting of this book for the small screen!
