A phenomenal read. Phenomenal characters. Phenomenal story. Phenomenal writing. One particular chapter made me ugly cry. My one criticism is I grew very tired of Sadie always being angry at Sam for various things and either not making it up to him or taking years to do so and (I don't think?) ever apologizing to him. But that's not a fault really of the character or the writing. There are people and relationships like that. It just pissed me off tho.
What a ride this was! I read the last half in probably a day. I had to find out what happened! And let me tell you, the twist at the end I did NOT see coming! Love that! Good characters. Good, interesting plot! It was a tad slow at first and introducing a ton of characters. Parts drug on a little bit so that's why I'm going four stars, but overall really really enjoyable!!
I have to admit it was good and I didn't see a majority of the twists coming. I felt it was a little silly at times but I just needed to remind myself it's a thriller and they're supposed to be kind of ridiculous twists! I have been reading too many romance and literary fiction recently. Need to get back into the world of ridiculous thrillers! I'm interested in rolling into book two now to see what Peter and Ainsley get up to next!
I really enjoyed this one. And I really enjoyed the ending too. The main character, Frank, annoyed the ever-loving shit out of me sometimes and I was tempted to mark down a star for it, but the ending was really good and I flew through the second half of this book in a day, so I think that's always a sign of a good book!
All three of Jason Rekulak's books have kind been home runs for me, so I'm feeling good about whenever he writes a fourth book!
I loved it. I use Romance books as night pallet cleansers for all the Horror/Thrillers I read and this is just what I needed. I loved all the characters. It's a cheesy romance at time, yeah, but they still felt fairly real. I absolutely loved the plot! And the fact that there was a good conflict story woven in there. That was a nice surprise! I'm going to listen to The Honeymoon Crashers which is Unhoneymooners book #1.5 but it's an audible original. Looking forward to that too! And then I already have Christina Lauren's Roomies to read as well. What can I say? I'm officially a romance reader and lover.
It was SO GOOD you guys! Erik Larson has such a way of telling a nonfiction story that it feels like fiction, so it's easy to read! It's compelling and makes you want to keep turning the pages to see what happens next. I knew some about the precursor to the Civil War (and I admittedly have an obsession with all things Abraham Lincoln) but there was an unreal amount I didn't know. And he dives into specific people from that time with all of their diary entries and diary entries from other people about them. Everyone did such a good job of recording everything back then! And, let's be honest, now is the time to read this book. The events leading up to the Civil War, with such a fracture between political parties and their people, divided the country and things got nasty and well...isn't that exactly what we're dealing with now? It's uncanny and unsettling.
Sometimes you just read the right book at the right time. This was THE right time for me to read Drowning. I cried throughout the book and BAWLED, had to stop to blow my nose bawled, through the end of the book. This book was incredible. Wow. No words really. I don't write reviews anymore but just had to say something on this book. Read it. If you're a parent, read it. If you're in love, read it. If you're a human with emotions, read it.
I liked it, but man that beginning 40-60% was so slow. It was...interesting enough that I didn't put it down (helped tho that I am reading this for a book club with friends) but it just wasn't really going anywhere. It got better and a bit faster and more interesting.
But I wonder, am I just not smart enough for this book? Did I not “get” it all perhaps? Not make all the connections? Not remember the characters and what happened between them enough to remember when it's referenced later? I don't know. That's the problem with people like me with a brain and a memory like me. I still enjoyed it tho. Station Eleven is an all-time favorite of mine so I was excited to get back to Mandel. I'll definitely have to get to The Glass Hotel soonish because apparently characters from that book recur here in Sea of Tranquility. I don't think you have to read them in order, but I'm slightly annoyed I read this one before Glass Hotel now.
