See allI didn't like the writing - it may be the translator that didn't make a good job - but I like the story. He seemed a little self-centered and a troubled man, for sure. His life doesn't seem to have been a happy one.
I understand when others mention this book as slow and dense and it was hard for me to like Bjartur. However, I miss Iceland and this book was perfect to take me back for another 2 weeks. I loved the writing and narration style, João Reis did an amazing job translating it, I could feel each seasonal change and the hardship of such a desolate place. It also made me think about my own parents and how country life and poverty can be very similar in very different countries. Halldór Laxness definitely won a special place in my heart, can’t wait to read more from him.
It's funny... Because I know I've read this book but I don't remember the ending. Despite that, it was indeed a good book.
I don't usually read books like this. I read it by advice and I really liked the thoughts that Malcolm Gladwell present us. I recommend this one, it has an interesting point of view that everyone should think of.
