The audio narration by Tim Gerard Reynolds really made this worthwhile for me. There was a lot of info-dumps of the military hierarchy saturating this whole story but i understand that's fairly necessary. The action was exciting and the battles were the gems of this story. I'll look forward to watching the anime for the comparison.
I love the satisfying twists to these stories, you might have an inkling to where it might be going and then pow- it hits you with an abrupt end. I love those kind of stories. Great fireside tales of atrocities and unspeakable horror. I loved every second of it. There were humorous elements and heartbreaking elements and awful cringing horror elements. Although this is my first read by Lutzke, I feel this is what the author is known for and it's very well done.
But- ummmm- whatabout- there???s a lot of things in this book that I???ll forget about when the other books come out and it???ll be like ???Oh yeah!??? There???s so many moving players here it???s getting a little crazy. Did it need to be this long? Probably not. But was is a good read? Absolutely. The longest book I???ve read in my life so that???s saying something.
This was such a great adventure. The world, the imagery and the fleshing out of all the little details really adds so much to the story and Ben Galley does a fantastic job. The book follows 2 main characters in different parts of the world along the same timeline. The convergence of these has yet to happen in book 1, however many pieces are afoot to make this trilogy ascend to an epic scale. I really enjoyed the characters and their characteristics.
The audiobook narration is fantastic as well!
This book was very exciting and quite unpredictable. I felt like the writing and the path that these characters took was very intricate and developed, much more that I had expected from a debut novel. The range of places that the story went was quite vast. This was very well done.
For Fans Of: I, robot. Tao (Netflix)
This was quite a quick burn, short and sweet. I thought the premise was super interesting but it kind of fizzled in the second half. I would have like to see it pull in more of his manuscript and explore that a little more and he saw people writing on a typewriter - so why didn't he take that opportunity to write new passages for his own gain? What was the purpose of him going to that ‘other camp' of sleepers as I felt that hindered the pace of the story.
4.5 stars! This was such a cool ride! Star Wars meets a world of magic and conjuring. It was energetic, refreshing, new and familiar all at the same time. The writing was detailed and the action scenes and space battles felt very immersive. Boots, Nilah, Orna, I loved the characters as their personalities were very flushed out and relatable. The glyphs and the different ‘specialites' of sigils pulled in a tiny bit of the D&D, we know there are Mechanists, Shieldmasters, and an Influencer. I can't wait to see what new magic and characters pop up in the rest of the series. I'm excited to dive into Book 2!
This book was such a great adventure. It brought me into a big wave of nostalgia for all the fantasy/buddy/adventure movies that I grew up on. I listened to the audiobook (from the library) as I followed the images in my physical copy and it was fantastic. There was a point towards the end where I was smiling, laughing, and clapping. So much fun!
(Audiobook Review) I thought this was a good story and perhaps I would have enjoyed it if I had just read it on my own. The narrator has a strong Nigerian accent which made it a bit tricky on 2x speed and the inflection on some parts felt a little off. It was quite an odd story about being human and alien all at the same time. it was enjoyable and I will probably be reading the next in the series.
Holy wow. This book hits hard and is not for the faint or fragile. In the future, indiscriminate killing is the new television phenomenon.
This tells the story of the people behind the cameras/show and a few perspective from those caught in the fray. This book is very vulgar and brutal, and I don't know what that says about me but I laughed and I gasped and I loved it.
