Rating: 3.5 ⭐️ What I appreciate is that Lagercrantz kept the characters' personalities and overall behavior. However, sometimes I felt like the story was all over the place, and the pacing wasn't as the original trilogy. But I have to recognize this was a good story, and it made me curious about the next books.
I've heard some awesome things about this book, and those good recommendations from people I know it's what drove me to buy this book. The writing is beautiful, and it's what kept me reading. I can't deny Rothfuss has a way with words. You can actually see how much effort he puts in every sentence. It's like he doesn't waste his words! However, the story itself had an odd pace. I was bored most of the book, but some scenes were so incredible I felt like I was in the story. But those moments were few so I can't say I enjoyed the whole book. In conclusion, I think this book is good, but not for me. I will read the next book (and the novella) just because I already purchased them.
This book has different layers of mystery. I admit it puzzled me when the plot took another direction, and I was kinda confused because I didn't see the point of it. However, in the end I realized it was a good move. If you want to start reading this book, I suggest you to be patient. The ending is satisfying, and it's definitely worth the read.
I was always curious about this book, and I'm so mad at myself for not reading it before. This novel had a fast paced story with lots of stuff to think about, and a good dose of science, I mean, what else could I ask! However, what kept me from giving it 5 stars were those kids, specially Lex. That kid was extremely annoying, and I couldn't stand her in any chapter. If that was Crichton's goal with that character, congrats! He made one of the worst kids on literature! Without Lex, the story would have been perfect. She's such a brat I couldn't help but dislike her. Besides her, I think the book is awesome!
I haven't read The Lord of the Rings (yeah, shame on me), but I can confidently say this book is nothing like that series. Maybe the comparison is due to the large fan base and impact this book has. However, I can't see the epic fantasy elements here.
I have never heard of this series before, so my review is based solely on my first encounter with this series.
That said, I don't think this is a bad book. I see a lot of people complaining about the translation, but for being honest I didn't think it was too bad. I'm sure I missed some wordplays and puns, but I guess that can't be helped. Chinese and English have different structures so I can't expect every translation to be perfect.
So why the rating? The main character. I found him so frustrating sometimes, that I wanted to stop reading just to slap him on the face. Maybe he changes later on, but I don't know if it's worth to invest in a book I'm not very sure I'll like.
Despite all of my objections, I still found the book interesting. The culture and worldview were refreshing and different from everything I've read.

I can see why Liu won awards with The Paper Menagerie. It was a fantastic story. It left me with a weird sensation I still cannot shake off. Liu truly shines with his short stories, now I want to see what he can do with full length novels.
