I read this not knowing this was a poly book with MMV! So absolutely loved it until the poly scene started at around 80-90%. Would have been 5 stars otherwise
It's actually a really great book. I just didn't fall in love with the FMC or MMC like I did in In a Week To Be Wicked and Do you want to start a scandal
DNF 50%. I loved the start of this fic but I just got to the point where I wasn't in love with any of the characters (the MCs or the side characters) so I didn't have an interest to continue. The plot also just dragged for me...
This is actually a 5 star book in terms of chemistry, writing and plot. It's just the amount of bone and death in this was a lot and not something a tend to love reading
I liked this book, didn't blow my mind but it was a cute story with some smutty goodness between the two main leads I adore. Jennifer writes really good romance and smut though the smut of this one wasn't at the level of deliciousness in her main series.
I wish this one had fang action now that Poppy has fangs too but perhaps in the next one!
I do like how obsessed Casteel is with Poppy, their banter Cas's dimples and Poppy's shyness/inquisitiveness
Great plot twist. It's just the amount of bone and death in this was a lot and not something a tend to love reading. I still hate that the FMC died in the previous book. Necessary for plot line but I liked her best when she was human. More innocent. The plot ended up being action packed and the relationship dynamics changed. The grovel was great. I just wasn't looking for an action packed book and preferred the relationship dynamics of the first book.
I could see this being someone else's 5 star book thiugh
I hated the plot in this book. The first 50% was fantastic, loved Shepherd and Claire's relationship and the spice.
The rest was too bleak. The FMC was raped by the OW and other people and miscarried. And then the whole war where Shepherd supposedly died and the FMC supposedly suicided. There is no HEA and I'm tempted to give one star because of it
The pacing was off in this book and I didn't find either of the MCs likeable.
Normally I like it when the romance doesn't take forever to start but the MMC and FMC's romance scenes started so abruptly that it left me confused.
This story took a while to get into but it picked up at the first smut scene at around the 40% mark. The plot and the characterisations were good. The chemistry was there. Didn't hit reread quality but I'm super excited for the next book because I can't wait to see what the author will put this couple through next, now that they're together.
This book does end on a cliffhanger but it's actually a solid ending to this first book too.
This was THE book that got me out of my book slump. Perfect dark romance. Plot twists, chemistry between FMC and MMC, great characterisations and the pacing/plot was enthralling.
The only flaw was too much focus on the FMC's friend, yet none of the mysteries introduced about this friend are ever resolved which just made it confusing. I could immediately tell the author was trying to set up for her next book after the trilogy but I wish she didn't do this in this book because it wasn't well done and ruined flow
As much as I love second chance romances, I didn't like the plot of this book.
It was a big miscommunication that lasted way too long and there were way too many scenes focused on a side couple, Bethany and Wes, instead of building chemistry between the main leads.
The only thing good about this book is the smut, which was well written. Not amazing but good. Wouldn't reread this book.
I was so worried that the author would pull a switch and change the MMC to another character but phew.
I normally hate any romantic scenes between the MMC and OW but the author managed to pull it off and there is only one. Although I can't wait until he drops her completely
The MMC is still unhinged and possessive to the max - the way he refuses to let other people look at the FMC, his reaction when the FMC asked him if he'd be okay if she cheated on him and when she gave someone a friendly kiss he had claim her.
The FMC isn't a doormat though and it's given us some good scenes of them negotiating and the MMC groveling and manipulating her.
Spice is also spicing - I just love their dynamics.
Almost was 5 stars - the MCs characterisations weren't the most memorable but I did like them
This dark romance has quite a few tropes I like with a possessive MMC who has no morals when it comes to romancing the FMC. The MCs were likeable and the plot interesting enough.
I just think the book is less steamy than the typical Sam Mariano books I'm used to, I'm seeing a lot of hints of the poly relationship that comes into play in the Surrender book which isn't my jam, and the fact that the FMC still hangs around the the MMC knowing he has a girlfriend gave me the ick for 50% of the book. Though the MMC has permission from his girlfriend, the FMC initially didn't know that and still went forward with her crush
Manipulative possessive MMC? YES. I devoured this book in hours, just flying through the pages. The dynamics, the plot and the characters in this book were enthralling. Roman as the MMC was both swoonworthy and terrifying. Loved this. It is a dark romance so mind the triggers if you have any
Better than the first two empire books but I still hated this one. I didn't really like Daniel in Knox's empire books but unlike Empire of Lust which successfully converted my dislike for Aspen to absolutely loving her, I still disliked Daniel from start to finish. There were places where I didn't mind Nicole but I absolutely hated every scene of past Nicole. I haven't read Astrid's version but I imagine she's 100% more hateable in that book.
The only parts I liked about this book was Aspen and Kyle's appearance
I hated the plot, I found it not enjoyable and cliche - the half brother, justification of Nicole's bullying of Astrid, seducing Levi and Chris, the reunion of Nicole with her step father and step sister, the reunion of Daniel with his brother and mother.
The plot about Levi being unharmed apart from a personality change from a car accident was just weird. Just seemed like a convenient way to fix his relation with Daniel at the end of the book and leave an opening for Rina Kent to create a Levi book for the marriage and grandchildren his mum wants.
And the stabbing at the end was also weird. You're saying that after Kyle from the mafia tortured Chris, Chris could still pull that revenge? Just seemed like a convenient vehicle to get the FMC and MMC to make up.
The FMC and MMC despite being unlikeable, did have chemistry for 60% of the book. I was quite invested in finding out how their romance was going to develop. Afterwards, I stopped caring though.
It was a 3 star book but then it started dragging and then I really didn't like the plot
This is the legacy of gods book I was looking forward to the most after Ruthless Empire and the Royal Elite epilogue because we could already see the beginnings of Eli and Ava and I was so eager to ship them.
But this book...fell short. I was hoping it'd be a continuation of Eli's infatuation but it wasn't. In this book, it changed to Eli being indifferent and finding Ava annoying while Ava had a crush on Eli though was rejected - this was abrupt and seemed out of place given the previous books in the Royal Elite trilogy.
I did like how manipulative Eli King is and the scenes of him being jealous was so good, but RK really made Ava into a mess mentally... it was unnecessary and disappointing. It's almost as if she can't write a story without the FMC having a mental trauma - alcoholism, drugs, psychosis, suicidal. Ava was also ditzy and sometimes idiotic and not in a charming way. She wasn't anything like the likeable bubbly Ava in God of Malice
RK also destroyed Ava's relationship with her parents in this book, making them overbearing, which was so disappointing given how much they doted on her and how much I love them.
And the chemistry between Eli and Ava... it was there but it would have been so much better if RK went for the childhood friends to lovers route like Ruthless Empire. Eli's affection for Ava being non existent until the marriage and then threatening her into marriage was almost too toxic for me to really ship them. We couldn't really tell when they fell in love with each other
I didn't really buy the threatening of murder leading to romance plot.
Their development was so slow I was getting bored 50% in and whatever plot that was there, I didn't like it. The Ava's mental health spiralling plot was just so bleak. I really had to push myself to finish the book, just to catch more moments of their parents and find out what the staircase incident was... and the staircase incident reveal... didn't like it though there was a nice little plot twist about why Eli tried to stay away from Ava. The ending with triplets though was too much, too unrealistic
Ari was really annoying in this book
I did really love the appearances of Silver, Cole, Aiden and Elsa though. They really kept me going.
Once I got over the initial 10% to get to when the FMC meets Jake, this book really started to kick off. The FMC had really great chemistry with all 3 of the men, and surprisingly, as someone who doesn't read RH, I really shipped the FMC with all 3 of them and the smut was really good.
The book at times was quite slow though and I had to skim through where nothing was happening. Particularly the last 80%.
What really took the rating down below a 3 star was the change of the FMC shifting to liking the MMC only was so abrupt it was jarring. Jake and Noah were suddenly dropped as love interests out of no where and Jake suddenly forced into something with Mirai.
DNF 19%. I tried to push through this because it's a fan favorite but I didn't like this at all. I could see myself liking Nikolai if he were coupled with someone else.
Nikolai has an incredible relationship with Kyle and his domineering personality is what I like in an MMC.
Brandon was uninteresting.
This book was boring - romance and plot-wise.
I like easter eggs of the parents but even Levi/Astrid's personality seemed to just be a copy paste of parent appearances in the other LOG books, you could have switched the names to Cole/Silver from God of War and there would be no difference in dialogue or mannerisms - the mother is exceptionally sweet and accepting of the male lead, while the father glares and hates the male lead on sight. I didn't see Levi and Astrid's characters in this book at all and it was all washed away.
I love some of RK's books but this seemed to be yet another book pushed out with childhood trauma/mental health being forcefully inserted onto the lead characters to give them depth or plot. I do miss the books RK wrote where mental health wasn't the main plot device.
I was quite torn on 2 or 3 stars. The book was just OK. I didn't dislike it and I can't say I liked it either. This is a law firm romance between an intern and a playboy senior partner. The female lead is warned away from the male lead and the male lead is almost immediately interested in having sex with her.
There isn't really any romance build up and I only kept reading to read all the smut scenes. The main characters were bland and for a book that I assumed was smutty, it took more than half the book to get even get to the first scene and only two scenes were between the main leads, the second being a MFM sharing scene towards the end. Another smutty scene was FF and the other was the male lead with a different female character.
The smut scenes were decent, though I probably wouldn't reread the book for them.
I didn't buy the two leads getting together. It just seemed like the male lead had some initial sexual attraction with the female lead and didn't want her ending up with anyone else hence proposing a relationship together. I wasn't seeing any romance.
After being disappointed by all of the other Empire series books, not liking the vibe of the blurb, disliking or being indifferent to Aspen and Kingsley, I expected for this book to be a DNF very quickly. But wow, I was blown away. I finished this book absolutely loving both Aspen and Kingsley, shipping them. Even the plot had the perfect amount of tension and suspense.
It took me a bit to get into the book but once Kingsley decided to start pursuing Aspen, the chemistry was so good! The romance and the smut was pure perfection. We had the possessiveness of Kingsley, his jealousy, his overprotectiveness and him being an utter simp for Aspen. Definitely a book I'd reread
I didn't even like Gwen and Nate in their book but in this book I adored them and their relationship with the MCs
Update: Have now reread this book soooo many times- he's so feral over Aspen and their steam scenes are sooo good
DNF 57%
Initially I was thinking this book would be a 3 star read. Self-confident attractive female lead instantly attracts football player male lead upon first sight in Las Vegas. In an effort to woo the female lead into his bed for a one night stand, he drunkenly goads her into marriage.
It's everything post-this where my interest started waning. The actual one night stand, which the whole plot actually resolve around is a fade to black. It supposedly involves the female lead, the male lead and the female lead with the male lead's two friends but we get nothing.
I normally dig cocky male leads trying to seduce the female lead but everything else was so dry and slow that I just lost interest. The plot also felt cliche. I tried to keep going until the sharing smut but I just really wasn't seeing the female lead's chemistry with everyone during the smut.
I was invested enough to finish but I didn't find Miles swoonworthy. There was too much OW drama and I misunderstood the title name, this book wasn't funny
DNF 30%. I've read this author's work in fanfic and this author is an absolutely fantastic writer but this book didn't work for me.
This book had no character build up or sexual tension - it just jumped straight to all 3 leads lusting over each other from the outset but then it took half the book for the MFM smut to happen so it felt like the book was dragging
