4-4.5* This book was tough to read but a very important perspective. Vanessa wasn't always easy to read about but her feelings and actions felt authentic and valid. The lasting effects and repercussions of trauma are hard to grapple with and there's no easy answers. Overall, an excellent (if not somewhat cringey) discussion piece.
The potential was definitely there for this book as the historical concept is super neat. I was disappointed that the main character hurdles seemed to be only family related and they just kept repeating over and over until I was rolling my eyes while listening. The relationship between the 2 main characters never felt genuine. The female stereotypical pettiness and character fainting into male arms was too much for me.
