This was probably 3 and 1/2 stars for me and might have been more if I wasn't listening to the audiobook. The audiobook narrator just kept putting the emphasis on the wrong word in sentences. The book itself was interesting and horrifying. I guess I would have liked to hear more about how what the author endured impacted her and how she survived it.
This was such a rare, wonderful book. I felt so lucky to be able to read about the daily life of a hare and all the sweet moments that Dalton got to witness and be a part of. I also really loved reading about Dalton's growth into an environmentalist–it was super refreshing to see her realizing the importance of habitat, and much more. I could have done with fewer quotes from older books about hares, but that's a small quibble.
I love Dr. Gunter and her science-based approach to giving health information. This book was packed with so much great knowledge. I did skip around a bit, passing up some parts that weren't as applicable for me, but it's great to know it's there to go back to when/if I need it. I also highly recommend her Substack as an up-to-date source of reliable information.
This was a fascinating and sad and inspiring and entertaining book. I really liked the way the author mixed her personal story (mostly of insane privilege) in with all she was learning as she started the work she describes. She seems like a truly amazing woman who is changing lives and the world, and it was great to see her evolve from “giving someone a turkey at Thanksgiving is making a difference” to “systemic change needs to happen now!”
DNF I really wanted to like this book. I liked the parts about her life, but the geology parts I just couldn't read. And there are a lot of them. My brain just went off to another place every time a geological explanation came up. I tried to go back and reread and it just happened every time. This is no one's fault (ha, ha) but my own.
Don't read this book–listen to the audiobook! It was so good. The narrator has the perfect dry, deadpan humor to match the writing. I was all excited to listen to other books narrated by the same person when I realized...it's narrated by the author! No wonder it's so good. Plus, the case includes Tommy Ramone, Gary Shteyngart, and lots of other famous people. The story itself is hilarious, suspenseful, and interesting. I even learned some recent history. Highly recommend!!
Wow. Couldn't put this one down. While its definitely a thriller-type book full of so many plot twists, it's really a story about love, especially that of a parent for their children. The book had so much sweetness and such great language and descriptions about what it's like to love and raise children.
