Strong sequel to a very good book. The story gets deeper and meaner, with desperate battles, painful betrayals and strong bonds of friendship. It's exciting and interesting, and the ending leads to a very interesting third part. All in all, rather well done and worth reading.

I didn't know much about how professional cycling worked, so this was certainly educational. The life of a domestique was interesting - not all professional athletes compete for personal victory, yet can still do meaningful work. That was interesting. However, on top of that, there was a bit too much detail, I think. I found the book to be boring at times; it could've been condensed a lot. If you're interested in athlete biographies and road cycling, Domestique is worth reading.

Aika synkeä pohjavire tässä on; dystopiaa ja ympäristökatastrofia. Ei nyt liian alleviivaavasti kuitenkaan, mutta varmasti herättelee ajatuksia nykymenosta.

Itse tarina ei ihan täysin vetänyt mukaansa; ehkä en ole aivan kohderyhmää, mutta jotenkin nämä koulukiusauskuviot ja laulukilpailukuviot nyt eivät vain houkutelleet. Luin kuitenkin loppuun asti, eikä tämä hullumpi ollut, etenkin jos piti edellisestä osasta.

No worries about the future of Asterix: this latest Asterix album is well done, funny and respects the legacy set by Uderzo and Goscinny. The new artist, Didier Conrad, hasn't changed anything, and the text sounds familiar as well. The story is funny and pretty much what you'd expect from an Asterix album.

Pakkohan tähän oli tutustua, kun oli tuo geokätköilyteema, ja mikäjottei, toimihan tämä. Kuudesluokkalainen Manu geokätköilee ja pyristelee ongelmiensa keskellä: on koulukiusaamista, kaverien puutetta ja isä vankilassa. Onneksi on harrastukset, koulussa vähän arvostusta opettajalta, uusi kaveri ja äidin uusi mieskin on itse asiassa ihan jees. Pääpainoksi saadaankin jännittävä dekkarijuoni. Ei hullumpi juttu, ei.

A paranoid love triangle in a country somewhat similar to Belarus. Interesting, with the different approaches the book takes, but also somewhat long-winding. It was a bit of a struggle to read.

Kiehtova juttu. Ihmiskuntaa riivaa P-influenssa, joka saa sairastajissaan aikaan muutoksia, jotka pelottavat muita ihmisiä. Mistään zombieflunssasta ei ole kyse, vaan sairastuneet, pihmiset, ovat jonkinlaisia superyksilöitä. Niinpä oikea ratkaisu on sulkea heidät pois muiden ihmisten ulottuvilta ja leimata perheenjäsenetkin epäilyttäviksi yksilöiksi. Kirja pyörittelee pihmisiä niin sairastuneen ja luolaan suljetun Pilvin näkökulmasta, Pilvin veljen Petrin kannalta kuin pihmis-aktivisti Tuomaksen puolelta. Valitettavasti tarina jää lopussa kesken siihen malliin, että jatkoa lienee luvassa...

Jälleen kerran upea valikoima kotimaisen luontokuvan parhaimmistoa, yhdistettynä mielenkiintoiseen katsaukseen luonnon vuodenkierrosta. Tällä kertaa aiheina muun muassa hanhien muutto ja taviokuurnien poikkeuksellisen laaja esiintyminen. Upea teos katseltavaksi.

Surreal and brutal short stories. Scary, unusual. Life in Iraq and Finland, juxtaposed and contrasted. Curious, and well worth reading.

Juha T. Hakalan kirjoista olen pitänyt, niissä on sellaista tolkun ääntä, jota on aina mukava lukea. Tässä myös. Ajatus on hyvä ja tärkeä: luovuuden kukoistus edellyttää aikaa ja oleskelua tekemättä mitään sen ihmeempää. Yrittäkääpäs unohtaa kiireet toviksi ja keskittykää olemaan, niin luovuutta ja uusia ideoita pukkaa kyllä.

Ihan kelpo kokoelma nykypäivän kotimaista kyberpunkkia – eipä tällaisia kokoelmia kovin usein vastaan tule. Tykkäsin, ei tätä genreä tyystin kannata 80-luvulle unohtaa, kyllä tällaisillekin tarinoille tilausta on edelleen.

Olihan tämä vakuuttava. Ylitti odotukset outoudellaan. Aihepiiri on kiinnostava, mutta sen käsittely ei ollut aivan tavanomaista. Jännittävä kirja; lopullinen mielipide vaatii vielä vähän pureskelemista. Mutta kannattaa lukea, kuten muutkin Jääskeläisen kirjat.

Fun, but if you've already read everything online, then there's little in this book - but of course, book has some benefits to it. Still, these Oatmeal books don't feel like keepers like the XKCD book or the Perry Bible Fellowship book.

Nice treasure hunt. The setting was unusual, at least compared to what I usually read, and the characters were interesting. The way Irene grew as a person as the journey proceeded and she learnt more about her past was another thing that kept me reading. Nice and worth reading, but not thrilling.

I've never been a fan of Hugo Pratt – I tried reading Corto Maltese when I was younger, but Pratt's style has never sat well with me. I thought I'd give him a new chance, now 15-20 years later. But no – his still is still not my cup of tea. I found this mostly confusing, and not particularly interesting.

This seemed like a fairly usual story to begin with, built from very familiar elements. Well, it is, but eventually there's a bit of a twist that makes the story a lot more interesting, and rather worth reading.

All stories of Death - not that many. Two proper stories, couple of smaller stories and then lots of pictures of Death - interesting, but not that great. However, the longer stories have some nostalgy value, perhaps, oh-back-in-the-90s kind of way. Must have for 90s goths, I suppose. Not a keeper for me, though.

Very intriguing. The alternate world Tidhar creates is charming, and the way our world leaks into it... It was really curious to see how the story ends up. There's some proper food for thought here, about the war on terror. World Fantasy Award once again proves that it highlights interesting books.

I'm impressed. At first this seemed like another boring example of literary fiction, well-written but dull. However, this turned out quite an interesting book. The characters are interesting, the setting gives room to delicious satire and the language is beautiful. I can believe this wasn't the easiest book to translate, but Kristiina Drews has done a good job.

Orkideat ovat monimuotoisia, kauniita kukkia, ja Janne Ahon valokuvateos tekee niille kunniaa. Tietoakin tarjotaan paljon, jos haluaa muutakin kuin vain katsella kukkien kuvia. Kirjassa on paljon mielenkiintoista tietoa näistä monin paikoin uhanalaisista kukista – en tiennytkään, miten monimuotoista on orkideoiden elämä. Kiehtova kirja. Tämä olisi erinomainen kahvipöytäkirja: upea, iso teos, jota on ilo selailla, mutta johon on myös mielenkiintoista uppoutua.

Nice introduction to important inventions. A simple book, with couple of pages per machine. My seven-year-old son who likes machines and inventions liked the book a lot, so I'd say this is a pretty good introduction to the topic for school-aged kids, or adults looking for something light to read. It's easy to read a chapter or two every now and then.

Toinen jännittävä seikkailu, jossa huolta ja mysteeriä tuo, kun puolet koulusta siirretään remontin vuoksi käymään koulua vanhalla tehtaalla. Geoetsivien porukka hajoaa kahteen osaan. Tehtaalla luonnollisesti kummittelee, ja nimimerkki Vaeltava aave käy loggaamassa geoetsivien uuden mysteerikätkön yllättävän nopeasti – mistä on kyse? Geotsivät ja vaeltava aave on taas aivan nappivalinta mysteereistä kiinnostuneille alakoululaisille, vaikka ihan itse luettavaksi.

Tove Appelgren on kyllä mestari. Kaikki Vesta-Linneat ovat olleet hienoja kirjoja erilaisista ikävistä tunteista, eikä tämä uusin ole poikkeus. Vesta-Linnea kuunvalossa käsittelee synkkiä tunteita, surua ja masennusta, hienosti ja herkkyydellä. Lapset pitivät, ja aikuisetkin arvostavat. Iso suositus koko sarjalle, nämä kannattaa lapsiperheen hyllystä löytyä, sen verran tärkeistä asioista on kyse.

Now here's a bleak tale. Set in the marathon dance craze in 1930s, the story has clear reflections in the reality-tv of our days. This story just ends with murder, That's clear from the outset, thanks to the way the story is narrated, but knowing the ending does not spoil the story. It's an interesting read.

The third Sebastian Bergman novel is once again quite interesting. It certainly helps that the characters are already familiar. The plot is pretty good as well - the case seems quite mysterious at first, but then begins to unravel in an interesting way. The ending is particularly fiendish, and makes you wait for the fourth book.
