Vauhdikasta menoa. Suosittelen, vaan kannattaa lukaista [b:Operaatio Troijalainen 13413700 Operaatio Troijalainen Christian Rönnbacka http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1326626524s/13413700.jpg 18698414] ensin.
African railroad workers in Senegal go on a strike in 1947. The white powers expect a quick strike, but the Africans persist and the strike lasts until 1948, and the colonials must give in to the striking workers. The book is a description of the events, by an author who lived through the strike himself.
Gorgeous world-building, all sorts of good stuff with the sci-fi soviet noir setting, but — and this is a huge but — there's simply no ending to the book. None. The book ends like a chapter ends. No closure whatsoever. Obviously sequel is in works, and hopefully arrives soon, because this book doesn't stand alone. I recommend waiting until a sequel is out before reading this one... I was very disappointed in the ending, but the storyso far is promising.
Impressive! The history of Congo is an interesting story of colonialism, post-colonialism and the new era of Chinese-African relations. Congo has been the African focal point of many historical turns and twists. This book does a great job summarizing what's been happening in this country that is relatively unknown considering how important it has been.
Another very strong book from Guy Gavriel Kay. A man is given an extraordinary gift; a gift of deadly proportions. He is suddenly of interest to everybody in a major empire. Kay's interpretation of an old Chinese empire is interesting, and quite unlike the usual fantasy empires. Another top-notch novel.
My first McEwan. The depiction of 1970s England was interesting; my mother used to live in London for a while in 1970s, so it was interesting because of that. I'm also interested in intelligence organizations, so the depiction of the MI5 was good, too. The book was more about books than secret agents, though. Not bad, not bad at all.
