Still not decided between 3.5 or 4 stars. There was a point where I really struggled to keep reading because I felt that the story was leading nowhere; but when I got to the last... third of the book, is when the story really caught me. It started to get very emotional and deep, giving a full new meaning to all that I have already read by then. The last chapters got me almost weeping (that would've happened if I haven't been reading it in public haha) and the ending was perfect. Those last lines of the novel are what make it deserve even 5 stars - but I'm not rating it with that because of the overall experience.
Aun no me decido entre 3.5 y 4 estrellas. Hubo un punto donde realmente tuve que esforzarme para seguir leyendo porque sentí que la historia no estaba yendo a ningún lado; pero cuando llegué a la última... tercera parte del libro, es cuando la historia realmente me capturó. Comenzó a volverse muy emocional y profunda, dándole todo un nuevo significado a lo que ya había leído hasta entonces. Los últimos capítulos me tenían casi llorando (lo que hubiera sucedido si no lo hubiera estado leyendo en público jaja) y el final fue perfecto. Esas últimas líneas de la novela son las que la hacen merecer incluso 5 estrellas - pero no lo calificaré con eso por la experiencia en general.

I would recommend it to anyone who wants a sweet friendship/love story with a historical background that gives it a bit of a sad tone... A bittersweet story, indeed.
Lo recomiendo a cualquiera que deseé una historia dulce de amistad/amor con un trasfondo histórico que le da un tono triste... Una historia agridulce, en verdad.

I'm really sad. Not good sad. Just sad. Estoy muy triste. No triste bien. Solo triste. This wasn't the grand magnificent closure I expected -the finale I desired, the finale this deserved- for the series. I feel it was... Insignificant. Cassie's dead, for example, didn't make me feel anything; the author could've easily been talking about peanuts and I would've reacted the same. Also, Marika's pregnancy felt so forced and out of place and like a desperate attempt to make a plot twist that just made me cringe. Este no fue el gran magnífico cierre que esperaba - el final que deseaba, el final que esto merecía- para la serie. Sentí que fue... Insignificante. La muerte de Cassie, por ejemplo, no me hizo sentir nada; el autor bien pudo haber estado hablando de cacahuates y yo hubiera reaccionado igual. Honestly, this book started a bit slow for me and at moments I had to push forward into finishing it, but now I finished, I noticed it was mostly because it was more dense than I expected. In the end, I can gladly say that it was worth it.
Honestamente, este libro empezó un poco lento para mí y, en momentos, tuve que esforzarme por terminarlo, pero ahora que terminé, me di cuenta de que en su mayoría fue porque fue más denso de lo que esperaba. Al final, felizmente puedo decir que valió la pena.

This book is about the transition of British 16-year-old Rachel from her childhood-veiled memories of Africa into the real world struggles that start to surround her when the African independence movement stirs up and locals start getting recruited to rise up against the British settlement. The story starts when Rachel gets back to her childhood home from her education years in England to which she was sent when she was a little girl and her mother recently died. This all develops against the backdrop of a beautiful African landscape perfectly described by the author (not that I've ever been there, but that's how good she does her job); she makes you be able to smell the humidity and dust in the air, and see the clear blue skies above and the abundant lilac jacaranda petals covering the dirt below.
Este libro es sobre la transición de Rachel, una joven británica de 16 años, desde sus memorias de Africa veladas por su infancia hacia los problemas del mundo real que comienzan a envolverla cuando el movimiento de independencia Africana empieza a tomar fuerza y los locales comienzan a ser recrutados para levantarse en contra del asentamiento británico. La historia inicia cuando Rachel vuelve al hogar de su infancia de sus años de estudio en Inglaterra después de haber sido enviada allí cuando era una niña pequeña y su madre había fallecido recientemente. Todo esto se desenvuelve contra el fondo de un hermoso paisaje Africano perfectamente descrito por la autora (no que yo haya estado ahí alguna vez, pero así de bien es como hace su trabajo); hace que seas capaz de oler la humedad y el polvo en el aire, y de ver claro cielo azul y los pétalos lilas de las jacarandas cubriendo el suelo.

The tale, however, is full of rich and well-defined characters that are very easy to despite or root for, and a crude set of events that gradually develop into a barrier that prevents Rachel from reconnecting with her beloved father and African family while clinging onto relationships and memories that no longer are what they were when she left several years ago.
El relato, sin embargo, está lleno de personajes copiosos y bien definidos que son muy fáciles de desagradar o de esperar lo mejor para ellos, y de una cruda serie de eventos que gradualmente se desarrollan en una barrera que evita que Rachel reconecte con su amado padre y su familia Africana mientras se aferra a relaciones y memorias que ya no son lo que eran cuando se fue varios años atrás.

What I liked the most about this book is that you can feel the main character's hope, longing and impotence with each situation she faces; your point of view transforming along with her intense desire to return to her childhood ways, the realization that old ghosts are very present in her family's current life, and that new threats are starting to creep in to separate her from her loved ones more than ever, even with her not being hundreds of miles away.
Lo que más me gustó de este libro es que puedes sentir la esperanza, anhelo e impotencia del personaje principal con cada situación que enfrenta; tu punto de vista transformándose junto con su deseo intenso de volver a sus costumbres infantiles, la comprensión de que viejos fantasmas están bastante presentes en la vida actual de su familia, y que nuevas amenazas comienzan a inflitrarse para separarla de sus seres queridos una vez más, a pesar de que ya no se encuentra a cientos de kilómetros de distancia.

In the end, there were some slow/very dense parts that, though, help build up the political background and understand the whys of how the plot develops, but concoct a riveting story of childhood yearning, buried secrets and the transition of a country into a new, independent setting.
Al final, hubo algunas partes lentas/muy densas que, sin embargo, ayudan a construir el trasfondo político y entender los porqué de cómo se desarrolla la trama, pero confeccionan una historia fascinante de añoranza infantil, secretos enterrados y la transición de un país hacia un entorno nuevo e independiente.

Realmente no sé qué leí. Lo terminé porque es corto y no le doy cero estrellas porque Goodreads no lo permite.
I really don't know what I read. I finished it because is short and I don't give it zero stars because Goodreads doesn't allow it.

Opinón poco popular, supongo. Talvez fue la edición (Casa Editorial BOEK México), pero todo fue muy confuso y constantemente perdía el hilo de lo que estaba sucediendo. Entiendo que la historia pretende ser loca y llena de cosas sin sentido, pero no funcionó para mi. Probablemente si me topo con una edición escrita en inglés le dé otra oportunidad.
Unpopular opinion, I guess. Perhaps was the edition (Casa Editorial BOEK México), but it was all very confusing and I constantly lost trail of what was happening. I get that the story is supposed to be crazy and full of nonsense, but it didn't work for me. Maybe if I stumble upon an english-written edition, I'll give it another chance.

Sucedió que me topé con este libro en la sección de “libros gratis” un día buscando aplicaciones para mi celular y decidí descargarlo; pensé “¿porqué no? Es gratis y quiero algo simple”. Cuando comencé a leerlo fue sin ninguna expectativa más que la de una lectura romántica simple y ligera, y porque no tenía ningún libro a la mano, sólo mi celular.
It happened that I stumbled upon this book in the “free books” section one day while looking for apps and I decided to download it; I though “why not? It's free and I want something simple”. When I started reading it, it was without any expectation but that of a light and simple romance reading, and because I had no book on hand, only my cellphone.

La historia comienza más o menos por todas partes, tuve que releer algunas secciones porque no entendía lo que quería decirme. Después resultó que se alternaban narradores sin una introducción previa; lo que, una vez identificados todos, funciona bastante bien en el desarrollo de esta corta novela.
The story starts more or less everywhere, I had to re-read some sections because I didn't understand what it was trying to tell me. Afterwards, it turned out that narrators were being alternated without previous introduction; which, once I identified all of them, works very well in the development of this short novel.

La idea general de este libro es un historia de amor no correspondida entre un hombre que siente que su vida es un fracaso y una mujer reservada e indiferente que lo salva de que lo despidan de su trabajo que odia. Lo interesante es que conforme avanza la historia, comenzamos a tener elementos de realismo mágico que, en mi opinión, al no saber desde un inicio que eran parte del relato, le dan la sensación de esperar lo inesperado y hacen más emocionante cada nuevo descubrimiento y cada nuevo curso que toma la historia. Por ejemplo, la revelación del conflicto principal real: Charlotte solía ser una prostituta que escapó de esa vida, por lo que ahora está siendo buscada por su antiguo jefe y John, que se enamoró de ella, se determina a defenderla y hacer lo necesario, a quien sea necesario, para que ella pueda vivir en paz. Con todos estos elementos de heroísmo, realismo mágico, urgencia, y hasta aventura, se hace de esta una lectura muy entretenida y satisfactoria.
The general idea of this book is a non-corresponded love story between a man who feels his life is a failure and a reserved and indifferent woman who saves him from being fired from his job that he hates. The interesting part is that as the story goes, we start having magical realism elements that, in my opinion, when not knowing from the begining they were part of the narration, give the sensation of expecting the unexpected and make each new discovery and each new course even more exciting. For example, the revelation of the real main conflict: Charlotte used to be a prostitute who escaped from that life, for which she's now being seek by her old boss/pimp and John, who falls in love with her, gets determined to do whatever necessary, to whomever necessary, so she can live in peace. With all these elements of heroism, magical realism, urgency, and even adventure, a really entretaining and satisfactory reading is made.

Como advertencia, tiene detonadores tales como violencia y lenguaje explícitos, y violación , así que recomiendo leer con cuidado a quien sea necesario.
There's a trigger warning for things such as explicit violence and language, and rape , so I recommend being careful if reading this affects you.

Como dije, leí Un Baile Imperfecto sin ninguna expectativa y terminé plácidamente sorprendida. Vaya elección para una lectura ligera. Le doy 4.5 estrellas.

Fue interesante releer el inicio de una saga a la que le tengo tanto cariño. Las Crónicas de Narnia fueron los libros que despertaron mi amor por la lectura; el hecho de tener 10 años y verte envuelto en un hermoso mundo de magia, donde todo es posible y existe un magnífico y justo León que reina sobre todo, simplemente te atrapa. En su momento creo que tuvo en mí el mismo efecto que todo el mundo dice que Harry Potter tuvo sobre ellos.
It was interesting to re-read the start of a saga that is very fond to me. The Chronicles of Narnia were the books that woke up my love for reading; the fact of having 10 years and see yourself involved in a beautiful world of magic, where anything is possible and there's a magnificent and just Lion that reigns above all, simply caughts you. At its time, I think it had the same effect on me as everybody says Harry Potter had on them.

Definitivamente fue muy notable la diferencia en la narrativa de lo que normalmente leo, y un poco desconcertante leer un libro infantil que recordaba con tanta magnificencia, 15 años después de haberlo leido por primera vez. Sin embargo, la historia demostró seguir haciendo el mismo efecto en mi: trasladarme al Mundo Entre Mundos, a Charn, y finalmente a Narnia, y hacerme querer quedarme ahí para siempre.
Definetly the difference in the narrative was very notable from what I usually read, and a little baffling to read a children's book that I remembered with such magnificence, 15 years after reading it for the first time. However, the story proved to keep on making the same effect on me: transport me to the World Between Worlds, to Charn, and finally to Narnia, and make me want to stay there forever.

En esta ocasión le doy 3.5 estrellas sólo por lo evidente del estilo infantil en la narración que me dejó deseando un poco más de esta maravillosa historia.
This time I'm giving it 3.5 stars only because of the evident children's style in the narrative that let me wishing a bit more of this marvelous story.
