I don't know why I keep reading this series. The stories are really interesting but the execution sucks. So much time is wasted on describing the make, model, features, manufacture of weapons. I also don't need to know every tendon, muscle, bone, organ a knife goes through as someone is stabbed. It comes off as lame writing the author just trying to hit their word count. It takes me out of the action.
I rarely give 1 star but I had too. This book was horrible. The lead character do NOT investigating. She just whines over and over that “not our jurisdiction” then bitches about her relationship. Oh a relationship that means NOTHING to the story. This is also NOT a mystery. There is only 1 suspect. I kept hoping some twist would come in but nope. Plus the ending was 100% Grisham realizing he was at 45,000 words and need to end the story before he hit 50,000. What a cop out ending.
I absolutely love this series. The series starts off great and just keeps getting better. The thing I like the most is the unpredictability of the plot. Just when you think you know what to expect, you get thrown one hell of a curve ball. All of the characters are well written, no two dimensional characters here! It is amazing that the author can make you care as much about ancillary characters and their story as the main protagonist. I found myself wanting to know as much about every new character encountered as I did the main characters.
DNF. The story starts fine but the writing is so bad. Within the first 2 hours (audiobook), there are too many juvenile references to the lead characters boobs ( sample: “she reaches to coffee cup and towel slips. she quickly pulls it up but not before Bill gets an eye full of her incredible figure and one of her breasts. Bill says ‘you sure are physically fit' she says to try to defuse the situation.”).
The story also goes lame with all the “major” revelations just being told to the lead vs discovered.
I could not take anymore...
I enjoyed the read. It was a slow burn but kept you interested in the solution. It was a little predictable. I like that the "clues" in the elevator did not give it all away. The captives slowly figured out why they were targeted. There was one surprise at the end. Vincent survived. What happened to him? The story could have been cut 20% to speed up and an epilogue of what happened to Vincent.
This book was just a beat down. It was like someone reading the imdb trivia for 80's movies with some obscure video games (since the popular ones were in the first book) thrown in. Everything was described in excruciating details. This book left nothing for the reader to engage with. There was no way for the user to solve any mystery or puzzle. I listened to audiobook read by Will Wheaton and he has made career off his gamer/pop culture cred but he just is not a good narrator.
