The Encyclopedia of Fantasy

If there were any one-stop bibliographic reference to the authors, themes, and purpose of fantasy literature either in print or on screen, this ought to be he one, with content that readers may turn to again and again.

The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction

Before Clute's and Grant's follow-up to this volume, their "ENCYCLOPEDIA OF SCIENCE FICTION" set newer and higher standards in both bibliographical research (with both books and science fiction film) and affordability of such material to the English-speaking reading public worldwide. If you can't begin to read or watch sci-fi literature, movies, or television because of a lack of referential "starting points," then by all means, borrow or buy this book.

You'll be overjoyed (if not initially overwhelmed) that you did.

They Called Us Enemy

From suburban California to the United States War Department Japanese-American World War Two "internment camps" in Arkansas, here's the harrowing yet triumphant story of George Takei's childhood, fraught with both prejudice and perseverance on all sides and from all corners.

Presented here is the only "graphic novel" included on this list which I finished today from cover to cover; it isn't always true for me to come across as story that is as riveting as it is resounding for both readers of today's generation paired with the remnants of my own.

Thank you, Mr. George Takei for providing the worldwide reading public with such an informative and eye-opening book which everyone ought read or otherwise ought to have read up to this point.

The Craft of Writing Science Fiction That Sells

Wrote a review for

I used this text at university during my first semester in a creative writing class as a freshman. A bare–bones, no-frills guide to "writing science fiction that sells;" details on character development, plotting, dialogue, and creation of setting as a thematic framework for novel or story. Many other similar books exist today rehashing the same rules for writing in this genre, as they have withstood the test of time and ever-changing cultural milieu in this ever-changing literary landscape.

This volume might receive honors as being the first of it's kind for achieving the above when it was originally written. My paperback copy also used a different cover.

What did we use before toilet paper?

These books may come out about "a dime a dozen" anymore, but with the rise of Internet "fact finding" and "data mining" becoming all the more prevalent media practices, it seems simply a wonder that volumes of trivia in the form of fact-finding or fact-checking don't simply disappear altogether with the continuing passage of time in relation to current continuing cultural and social trends.

Hero of the Underground: A Memoir

Perhaps it's easiest to consider reading Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue, who had somewhat similar ruminations on this very same subject in his own autobiography with the band's history.

Becoming Crone

Wrote a review for

One HELL of a read, and a pleasant ride so far. Makes me want to have a crone of my own, except this crone Claire has a mind of her own, especially after receiving a necklace cum antique magical witch charm/talisman with dimensional/portent altering powers from her favorite grandson Brendan during her disastrously anti-climactic birthday party. Also, a murder of crows is always waiting a stone's throw away, just outside Claire's front door.

As far as (sub) urban or weird fantasy goes, what more of a mere portent for fascinating future events could you as a reader expect to want when you and protagonist Claire are more than (merely and/or merrily) along for this (literary) ride?

Who Moved My Cheese?

Its not the chaos of of community change you ought worry about. It's the mental "baggage" you carry; most can be rearranped internally without the use of self-help books such as these. Hungry for change? Then stop gobbling down everyone else's goddamned "cheese!"
