This book is an example of why when a reading challenge has “read a book that's won an award” prompt I am bummed out.
I can honestly say I am not a fan of stream-of-consciousness books.
“Don't let everybody hear. I lo I lo. I'll take care of you. Let me. Oh no no no no no. I don't want. Want. Quiet pet. There he does it. Says come on now it's what's good you and us. 200+ pages of that. I started with the audiobook because McBride narrates it, but I knew straightaway there was no way I was going to keep up with what was happening so I switched over to the kindle version. Even then, it was.....not my thing. Add in the subject matter and the just plain awfulness of the experiences and, well, yeah. Not my thing. It does make me seriously question how something gets chosen for an award.
