As a tale of a young man finding a purpose in life, it's really well done. As a book published in the early 1930s about “we're all adults, so let's lay down our weapons and become pacifists” it's a crying tragedy. There was less focus on Christian faith in this one that most of Hocking's novels and I missed it.
