A very heartwarming/heartbreaking story about five children faced with grinding poverty or the relative ease of the children's home—but that would come with the likelihood of forever losing each other, as no one comes looking for a ready-made family that size.
Martha Mary is a strong character and her pain and trouble easily became my own as I read. There is dreadful suspense as there are multiple times that the little family faces doom and separation...If I lived in the late 1800s/early 1900s, I would be lining up for ready-made families of siblings if I could!
