In the small town of Innocence, Mississippi, days are long, nights are fragrant, and secrets are hard to keep. But when a brutal killer starts claiming the lives of the town's most attractive women, lifelong neighbors are forced to wonder if the culprit is a stranger lurking in the bayou. Or someone right next door.
Burned out by a whirlwind career, world famous concert violinist Caroline Waverly arrives in Innocence looking for a little peace and some time to think. She hopes that a stay at her late grandmother's house - the one with a covered porch just made for soft summer nights - will provide the tranquility she needs. But Innocence has something else to offer Caroline: handsome, charming Tucker Longstreet.
Tucker is known for keeping his romances short and shallow. But one look at Caroline, and Tucker realizes that she is unlike any other woman he's met. The coolly reserved Caroline feels an unexpected thrill at his ardent advances. But when she discovers a third murder victim in the murky waters behind her home, her summer liaison threatens to become much more. Because there's just one small problem with her new romance: Tucker is the leading suspect in the killings.

This was SO good. I'm eating this as a suspense/family drama and not as a romance. It took me way too long to realize who the killer really was and but everything together but this was done just beautifully!
Another re-read and another long one, except this time I wasn't bored or irritated at all. This book had a lot going on. For such a quiet small town there was a lot boiling right under the surface and it all seems to boil over right after Caroline Waverly moves out there!
Roberts kept me guessing the whole time! And I fell in love with every character, but I especially loved Cy. He was a story all by himself. The murder mystery kept me wondering thoughout, even when I was distracted by Hatinger family drama or Josie's sexual adventures.
This one is easily a good story that was still entertaining to re-read a second time.
I think I lived in a town similar to Innocence. The small town has the handsome plantation owner, the sheriff and several other important residents who all grew up together. Most of the locals know each other and are friendly for the most part. There is also a family or two who are not quite as popular, and of course, the mystery murderer who has been cutting up some local women.
Caroline inherited a home from her grandmother, and after growing up as a prodigy, decided she'd like to get away from the city life and live a quite life in a small town. Shortly after arriving in Innocence, she comes upon a body of one of the murder victims, but decides it won't scare her away. Thank goodness, because she soon hooks up with the handsome plantation owner. She is a key player in determining the murderer up until the end.
