A must-read to interpret all the statistical information we are served on the daily, especially in the age of clickbait, ideological internet bubbles and fake news.

Het was denk ik fijne collega Jan die mij er op wees dat Bill Gates How to Lie with Statistics aanraadde. Een klassieker, uiteraard. En natuurlijk had ik het al gelezen, meer nog: ik heb een oude vierdehandse papieren versie in huis.
Gekocht op een markt ergens, ettelijke jaren nadat ik het ontdekt had tijdens een vakantiejob in de bibliotheek van het Europacollege, waar het gezellig in de afdeling Economie stond, tussen de lijvige boekwerken over econometrie en andere dingen waar mij het zweet van uitbreekt.
Uit nostalgie heb ik het vandaag tusendoor nog eens herlezen. En ja, dat lukt, tussendoor herlezen: het is zeer, zeer kort. De 142 bladzijden in grote letters zijn doorspekt met leutige tekeningen, helemaal in jaren-1950-stijl. Et pour cause, wegens alsdat het boekje al van 1954 dateert.
Nostalgie, en niet veel meer dan dat vrees ik: het is leutig, maar iemand die ook ooit maar een half oog heeft laten vallen op iets dat met datavisualisatie, statistiek of gelijkaardige te maken heeft, zal niet echt veel bijleren.
Dit kan helpen voor een snelle introductie, maar degelijke handboeken statistiek hebben de volledige inhoud hiervan tegenwoordig in de eerste paar hoofdstukken staan.
