"From an Olympic medalist runner and the record-holder in the women's marathon and half-marathon, a lyrical, inspirational memoir on how harnessing the power of the mind can unlock hidden potential. Deena Kastor was a star youth runner with tremendous promise, yet her career almost ended after college. Her competitive method--run as hard as possible, all the time--brought her to the brink of burnout and fostered a frustration and negativity that threatened to obscure her success. On the verge of quitting, she took a chance and moved to the high altitudes of Alamosa, Colorado, where legendary coach Joe Vigil had started the first professional distance-running team. There she encountered what would become the dominant theme in her running career: the idea that building an elite runner meant developing the mind. Every gain in physical fitness would be dependent on and compounded by gains in mental fitness, which in turn depended on developing a mind-set that could marshal powerful forces of belief and confidence capable of conquering negativity in all its forms. Building a mind so strong would be a decade-long project, but it would propel Kastor to the pinnacle of running--to American records in every distance from the 5K to the marathon, and to America's first Olympic medal in the marathon in twenty years. Let Your Mind Run is a granular look inside the mind of an elite athlete, a remarkable story of achievement, and a fascinating primer on how the small steps of cultivating positivity can lead to outsize gains in performance"--

I listened to this audio book and loved it! I've been struggling with a foot injury that has sidelined my competitive running for a (frustrating!!) 8+ months. I began to look forward to my grueling pool runs and trainer rides, knowing I'd be able to listen to Deena's motivational story.
Of course being a true runnerd, I was engrossed by all the training details and race replays. But what made this book truly wonderful is in the title: the way that Deena has been able to continually improve and grow through her career through practices of mindfulness and positivity. Never pedantic, Deena walks (runs?) us through her incredible journey as one of the most accomplished American distance runners of all time and how she used positivity as a means to do that. There are invaluable lessons in her for everyone, runners and non-runners alike (but especially runners). I've already been incorporating a lot of her tactics in my life and plan to continue. Really an inspiration and I so recommend it. You can't walk away from this feeling anything but positive!
Well-written, and much more interesting and inspirational than I expected, given that it's about elite running and thus could have been totally inaccessible to, well, those of us who are not...
bookclub4m psychology nonfiction. A nice sideways look into sport psychology through the lens of a high performing US womens long distance runner. Kastor walks us through all the mental tools and perspectives she used to get back into running after a disappointing university career. Kastor goes on to attend 3 Olympics running track and marathons and breaks several US records in the marathon and the half marathon. (Reading about running suits me more than actually running)
