I must admit, I don't recall much about Hawke from the history book days. Brady, though, draws a colorful picture of the sea conflicts in the channel between England and France. Grafton, a bold young sailor from America, is in command of a ship which is captured by a French ship far larger than himself. Despite having no chance to win the unequal fight, he hates the ignominy, except that captivity throws him in company with the winning captain's spirited little daughter, Anne.
Years later, war is on again, and again Philip Grafton meets with Anne, now grown into a beautiful young lady. He's fighting for his life and liberty this time around, but it seems his heart is just as much in danger when this pretty miss is thrown in the mix!
Of course there are some long tales of sea battles as well. I definitely enjoyed the story of this plucky young man and the girl he loved.
