On one hand, this is a compelling story about a young couple who have a great deal to overcome and of a doctor who longs to have his own family despite having found his calling in the Canadian wilderness. On the other, it's a vivid picture of the depravity of man with thieves, rapists, men who want to own women, attempted murder, and so on. And the redemptive answer is a humanistic one instead of a Christian one, so it left me cold in the end.
