I think that, while this book is a good one, it simply isn't for me. I did like some aspects of this book. Winn, in particular is an interesting character. A man who is a half-blooded Indian trying to live and be respected in his society was a struggle that I could sympathize with. Maggie, a woman who travels through time to come in 1622 America is also interesting, although I was far more interested in Winn than her. As far as the romance goes, it works in the context of the novel. Both of the main leads spend time together that they spend (for the most part) finding out more about each other. Through this communication they begin to develop a deeper understanding of each other and this then turns into affection for the two of them. The motivations between all of the characters, both major and minor, make sense in this book.
So why would I give this book such a low rating? Well, I think that is because that, although this book is well written, it does not have the ability to keep a guy like me entertained. Truth be told, I only choose this book because of the time travel aspect, and because it was the first book in the series (my library has a horrible time getting the first of any novel series, no matter when it was published) so I think that that was a bit of a problem. I had no idea that this was more of a historical romance, and I suffered for it as a result. Also, I think this book goes on too long. It feels like some parts are stretched out too much, and that it could have been shorted by about 100 pages, or so. If you enjoy historical romances, then pick this one up, I doubt you'll be disappointed. But as for everyone else, it would be a good idea to stay away.
