What song would you put on the playlist of your life when everything falls apart?
Hope is a pop star who appears to the world to have it all. On the inside, she is destroying herself. She is isolating, drinking, and sleeping with her interns and assistants.
Hope looks at her world and thinks is this it? She ruined any chances she had with the love of her life, Julie, by cheating on her - not just once but over and over. She is feeling lost and thinking that this is not what her music is supposed to be about.
Then shots ring out and everything goes to black (stealing from Amy Winehouse here).
I do not want to give much more away as this is a novella, but it is a really good novella. Eliza Andrews brings the everyday world into Winter Love Songs (B07ZZGQHCV, 2018) and I love it. She connects music lyrics with the characters' feelings from across the genres and decades. I love music and constantly have different playlists airing throughout my house. Don't we all have songs that we connect to moments or emotions?
Andrews taking the risk of adding the harshness of the real world into a holiday romance is worth it. It does not take away from the book or overload it with sentimentality. Andrews has just the right balance between the reality and the emotion of the events that transpire.
This would have gotten a five star rating, if the ending had not been a bit rushed. I think if this had been a full-length book then the romance would have gotten a fuller flavor than the quickie we got. This is my only complaint and I think it is only because of the lack of space. I was raving about the story before I even finished. This is a holiday must read. A song to keep in your heart even beyond the winter. ✶✶✶✶
