I listened to this book read by A.J.Jacobs and it was excellent. His phrasing and ability to tell a truthful story is great. I would heartily recommend. If I had one con for this tape - it is the filler music between the vignettes. It was some sort of Dixieland jazz that pulled me out of Mr. Jacobs story every time.
This is a great break book for when you have read too much serious stuff and I don't meant that in a condescending way. The chapters are introduced by bumper stickers and sayings on t-shirts for example, “When killing clowns always go for the juggler”. If you find that funny - and I did - you'll like this book.
The concept of a wise-cracking, klutzy grim-reaper is good, the storyline is good and it is an easy, fun read.
It does get a little off track right near the end but the author pulls it back in preparation for book two in the series.
This is a good debut novel and I'm looking forward to more.
I think this is probably my favorite of the Flavia de Luce books so far. Flavia the semi-mad scientist - at least in her mind - is growing up. She of course solves the murder which her small village seems to such an attractant to. But here's the kicker...the last line reveals a MASSSIVE cliff-hanger which is that...well I suppose you wouldn't want me to tell you that.
Enjoy!
Heavy handed supernatural mystery. Shape shifting cop and a psychologist human profiler with extra-sensory talents team up to solve a series of murders. The shifter is not well drawn - just all beast, violence and sexuality. The psychologist is much better drawn but is pulled down by the other character. Hard core sex scenes also lie on the side of pure animalism.
This book is like a Hostess Cupcake or as we called them when I was a lad, Devil cakes. There are a couple of times you may ask why am I reading this; push through as the creamy center of an ending is totally worth snarfing down the whole package and you will be left wanting to scrape your teeth on the cardboard to gum away the last bit of sweetness from this book.
Enjoy!
Through most of this book I thought I hated it. But I was wrong. The writing is strong, the story is strong (if unpleasant), and Julie....not strong so much and maybe just a touch psychotic. I will have nightmares of her in butcher whites with a scimitar trying to pack me in ice so she can harvest my kidneys.
This book has received a lot of 1's and 2's and I was well on my way to giving the book the same till I realized the book is really well written and tells a strong story even if Julie's own life is pretty F***ed up.
My only hope is that Robert, the dog, comes out of all this without being scarred.
Non-fiction book about one woman's year long journey into creating her own reality. Mostly a good book although some of the folks she quoted I resonated with more than the author. One quote in particular was delightful and I paraphrase...“How can you open yourself to abundance if your heart is closed tight like a fist?” Again, I'm not looking at the book so the quote is probably just close but I love the lesson.
If you believe in creating your own reality this is a quite good reference.
