Through most of this book I thought I hated it. But I was wrong. The writing is strong, the story is strong (if unpleasant), and Julie....not strong so much and maybe just a touch psychotic. I will have nightmares of her in butcher whites with a scimitar trying to pack me in ice so she can harvest my kidneys.
This book has received a lot of 1's and 2's and I was well on my way to giving the book the same till I realized the book is really well written and tells a strong story even if Julie's own life is pretty F***ed up.
My only hope is that Robert, the dog, comes out of all this without being scarred.
This book is like a Hostess Cupcake or as we called them when I was a lad, Devil cakes. There are a couple of times you may ask why am I reading this; push through as the creamy center of an ending is totally worth snarfing down the whole package and you will be left wanting to scrape your teeth on the cardboard to gum away the last bit of sweetness from this book.
Enjoy!

This is the story of Billy Creekmore a juvenile who grows up in an orphanage, is rescued by the deux ex machina of an intervening angel in the guise of his uncle. He lives a “joy filled” life working in the coal mines as a mule skinner (someone who has mules pull tons of coal) till the villain in the form of the Miners Union kill his uncle and various assorted menfolk and male children forcing Billy to run off and join the circus where he is reunited with his father by “accident” and then decides he is no good son of a ....”
The book is mawkishly sentimental, the plot line is contrived, and the voice/tone/something I can't define was annoying.........and yet I couldn't stop reading this horrid little book to the very last page to see how it finally ended. Arrgh.
I wasn't sure what all the hype was about but now I know. This book got me out of my armchair and walking barefoot in the backyard just to see the placement of my feet and toes when they landed.
Sometimes the book went off on odd tangents but for the most part it was interesting, entertaining and inspired me to get off my duff and start moving.
I liked the book at the beginning and was compelled to keep reading to the end. There are some disturbing elements to the book. I did drift when the author went into an angst ridden 9/11 plot sub line. I think the book would have gone to at least four stars for me if the author had just told the story. ALthough as I write this I would say he captured the feeling of 9/11 pretty well for all of us. I'm just not sure it was appropriate for this book.
Forensic profiling in the middle ages. Adelia must discover the serial killer who is killing children while keeping secret her status as a doctor of death (autopsy doctor). Because she is a woman if she displayed this knowledge she would be put to death as a witch. As it is there are some acrimonious run-ins with the church anyway. Highly recommended.
Excellent book. This is the story of Edgar Sawtelle and the magnificent Sawtelle dogs. It is a book of love, affection, understanding and betrayal. All of the characters are fully developed (even the sub-characters)and I feel I would recognize them if fiction ever became life. There are a few times in the beginning where the book got a bit tedious but this is definitely one to read.
