The language was delicious, the plotting was thick and exciting and then I got bored. The relationship between Bruno and Lydia was wince inducing for about the first fourteen times but then I became immune to the sexual aspects of Lydia and Bruno and was just thinking, “yeah, I got it she's consensually “F**king” a chimp.” Again the language made me continue to read but at some point I found myself wanting to skip large parts of the narrative - I didn't. After that the book was rescued by characters such as Clever Hands and his quiet communication as well as the stupendous girth physically, mentally and psychologically of Leon. All in all it could have been a welcome smaller book but it just gets clunky as a large one.
AUTHOR: DO NOT READ THIS REVIEW!!! I want to see more of your work. I don't think my review is going to keep you from writing - at least I hope not, but it's really not something you need to hear.
Amnesia is an antiquated plot device and pushes a book to the level of soap opera. The writing is snappy, but I got distracted about 4/5's of the way through the book and that is not a good place for that to happen.
Chilling. We've seen some of this happening outside the United States and now we are seeing it begin within the US. Fundamentalism and zealotry - no matter what shape or form is never good for the majority of the people - and those people who practice these things almost always say they are doing it for the good of society. This is a lie. Do not believe liars - because they will lie to you. They will also say they are the exception. That is most likely a lie - we saw that in the last US election when people did not vote with their morals, but for power over others.
Do not ever believe that liar will not continue to lie.
This book will require closer reading but from my first time through it appears that Mr. Kelley presents a solid system that will help us to realize that there should not be a fight between our work life and our personal life but they are both a part of what makes up our total being.
Some of his anecdotes are quite dated and if you haven't heard them before then you haven't been listening. But get beyond those and there are some nuggets to be found.
