The good? I liked the concept of the story. The going to the past and present just by something simple. There were some sad parts but the writing style ruined a good bit for me, on top the whole “love” part. It needed some clean up, in my opinion. I don't know why Scott thought that writing style was the best.

You have so many elements you need to consider and it takes a while. Books like this you need to sit and stew in the information you were given. Let's start with the one who created this whole thing Rufus he was the epitome of a pathetic human. I could go into more but that would just be me ranting. Then we talk about Dana. I loved her strength and how she even understood herself but her flaw was sometimes not giving the equal treatment to her husband. For example, him coming back after 5 years and then thinking all of a sudden he isn't going to be the same person and that he isn't adjusting like he should, while also talking about how she needed to adjust? Like give the man some damn time. .This part is MY opinion if you don't like it you can skip your lil ass right on:I found it flat and though she told us the emotions I didn't feel Octavia's. Not saying she didn't put any of that into her book but for me I just wasn't receiving it. I am more of an angst woman so reading something that deals with such topics I want to feel it on my level. BUT that doesn't mean I think she SHOULD have written it like that. I think she wrote it how she wanted to and if she is happy with the book then so am I.

I read Our Crooked Hearts by Melissa but I liked this book more.

I like the concept of it all but the writing could be worked on a bit more. It is easy for people to use filler words when writing, a habit we formed thanks to being forced to write essays in school, and what this does to the story can make the whole thing feel stop-n-go. That is how I felt when reading. Another concept of the book that could use some focusing on is building characters and that thrill. Fleshing them out before writing, I have found, helps reads connect and care about who you are writing about. It takes time but in the end gives better results. I know this is Kyle's first book and that in itself is a scary accomplishments but hopefully he will see this and take it as helpful criticism.

Richard took a Stephen King turn in talking about a 9 year old thinking sexually things. Ew. 2. The mystery and thrill were dulled down. There were times where I was really into it and creeped but other than that I listened to a man talk about his life like it meant something? Sorry Richard but the spot light doesn't always need to be on you. Eh, kinda narcissistic, no? I get using where you grew up at but even naming the character after you? Big OOF. The whole story gave me The Boogeyman and Gerald Games vibes. I have a feeling the second book will go more into a GG vibe since he might be talking about the guy who was touching people in their sleep? I don't know but kind of hoping book 2 is a bit better.

I think it was done well but I wasn't really sucked in. Being along in space or the sea is scary and that is the only thing really horrifying about the book. It isn't a bad book it is a good little read to get you through a project or some activtiy.

It wasn't. It was a snoozefest. For something so short I should have finished this in a max of 2 days. I don't even think if the writing was good it would have saved this book. There was no horror aspect in this. Nothing was built up. The creature was so flat. I was really excited for an Appalachian horror story and this whole thing did not do it justice.

Then the ending? I really wish there was more EMPH with these characters and events because this book would have been a 4 or 5 if so!

Then having them exposed to straight porn? I get that is part of coming of age but does it really need to be in a manga? Besides that whack ass shit the books was pretty funny and sad. The art could get a bit creepy but... it wasn't bad off. I love how the manga shows the kids lives and their families. Will I be reading the 2nd vol? Maybe.

It leaned more on Mystery/Thriller with a sprinkle of Horror. I was hooked from the start. Some characters I didn't care for, like Blue and Amanda, though I did understand their line of thinking I just wasn't the happiest with them. Even though I could see where things were going I enjoyed the ride and with the way things ended I really hope there is a book two.

I picked up this book because it hit a couple prompts for a couple reading challenges.I think poetry, in order to be really good, has to hold that hit for most of the time you are reading it. This did have times when my chest tightened and tears threatened to form. The story told through these poems is heartbreaking. Like stacked cotton, feathers, and clouds you start to feel the heaviness.I will leave this off with a quote from this book that struck me and thinking about it now has me tearing up.“This life needed only one of us to live. If you had lived beyond those first few hours, I would not be living now.My life means yours is impossible.Only in the gap between darkness and light, only in that blue-tinged breach, do we manage to make out each other's faces.”

It is far from horror. Ren is a girl who loves water to a mentally ill degree and the story is what comes with said mental illness. I get the underlying concept of the story but it is one of those books that are filled with “all men are monsters.” I get it in the concept of Ren's POV but doesn't mean that the constant wasn't repetitive. I think I would have rounded up to a 3 if the ending had been done a bit better. Nothing scares me more than mentally ill people killing other mentally ill people in the sake of helping. like we all know damn well she wasn't a mermaid and the last line of the book was her swimming away... which meant she drowned but it was done so poorly. And I couldn't bring myself to fully care about Ren when she was treating Cathy like crap. but I guess you see that toxic pairing in movies and books. Iunno this book just wasn't it for me. A majority of the book was just sad and the horror part was an oh no but not an OH NO. The one good thing that was shown in this book was the process of the mind when trauma happens over and over again, especially when it is intense. That part I am sad and angry with Ren and Cathy.

The first one was based on The Fall of the House of Usher and the story isn't my fav to begin with and has been done SO MANY TIMES but this one was nice. I hadn't heard about the lores and myths before so I was more attentive. That being said thought the story was fine it wasn't great and Alex is just... a pain 60% of the time.
