Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz's Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States: A Graphic Interpretation

Wrote a review for

really valuable resource for learning about the history of Anglo-American colonisation. Although there are aspects that are shortened or simplified by having it be a graphic novel, I mostly think that it allowed me to dwell on the history and the people more, giving them more space per page, stopping readers from just processing these injustices as numbers.

I did think this would have more of the history pre-colonisation, so I was slightly disappointed by that. Also would like to read a book actually by an indigenous person!

Snowed In at Holly Hill Cabin

Wrote a review for

really lovely to read something like this that shows an adult exploring her bisexuality, and has a thruple in a way that's both cute and sexy.

Meeting genre expectations, the characters are pretty shallow, and the dialogue is cheesy, but that's not really what I'm here for. The cozy Christmas vibes are just right.

Fahrenheit 451

Wrote a review for

this book has so much to live up to as its known as such a classic and there are absolutely moments where it does. I really love the frantic, thoughtless way that so many characters speak, it feels so reminiscent of ai-tiktok speak. The superficial personalisation of tech to make it feel like it's "part of the family" is very prescient. Weirdly a lot of the ways in which I question this book are in relation to the attitude it shows towards books. So much of the stuff is about Great Writings from Great Men, and while I do think these are incredibly important as part of history, and to encourage debate, I also think there could be a lot more emphasis on writing as a creative art, and the ways in which Guy finds himself moved by the writings.

I don't like the way that women are treated in the book. Mildred could be a really interesting character by herself, but the shallowness we see from her is mirrored in almost every other female character to the point of it feeling like a stereotype. Clarisse is the only exception, and she feels like a very wispy virginal darling. I could really appreciate her character if other aspects of the story were less gendered (the men at the end?? like why do they all have to be men???)

The Dark Forest

Wrote a review for

Whenever this book was directly about the wallfacer project, I absolutely loved it. They were all such weirdo menaces to society, I found it really interesting to learn what their plans were. Hines's was the most crazy.

Really didn't like the romance, felt very incel-y to me. I did really like the theme of love as motivation, though.

major downgrade from the first book but I still enjoyed overall. Ye Wenchue was such a great character, I missed her in this. The whole book was far too masculine, the women only footnotes in men's stories.

*spoilers* teared up at the return of that one trisolaran who tried to protect humanity. love is real.

All the Janeway sections are 5 stars. I literally cried at some of the ones about her dad.

the Kazon bits are soooo boring but would probably make good TV. This is the first Star Trek novel I've read and I'm pretty impressed. Jeri Taylor's love of Janeway is so clear 💖

The Three-Body Problem

Wrote a review for

felt like this book was edging me... I kept reading one chapter more then one chapter more thinking that at any moment there would finally be aliens but then instead that chapter would go on a thoughtful and mysterious tangent I never would have imagined. Love this as a physicist and it really won me over in terms of politics as well.

In his afterword, Cixin Liu says he focuses on the science and doesn't mean anything about the politics but I seriously can't believe that. Girl you created a series that says so much about how powerful people would rather sacrifice humanity than for for self-improvement of society!! you can't just call that non-political lol

We're Falling Through Space: Doctor Who and Celebrating the Mundane

Wrote a review for

really sweet and pleasant read, perfect for someone like me who is obsessssssed with Jackie Tyler.

I didn't always feel like it had the most analysis but I did really love how it brought it together in the end, made me cry. everybody is special and everybody matters.

Mars

Got better and better as it went along. The last three stories were really great, I really love weird conceptual sci-fi like the last story. We read Day Trip to Durmitor and Carnivore for my book club and which I thought were pretty average for the collection (I like the former but could not understand what an earth a lot of it was meant to mean).

Abby was my favourite, I would also recommend The Guest, Heading West, and The Underworld.

Twilight

yesss I can really see the appeal now. once you start looking for what aspects of this are teen girl wish fulfillment it's soo full of it in a way that makes you go "good for her". We have: - Everyone being in love with Bella. seriously it's like 6-7 men. - power fantasy of being the only one who can influence a powerful man. - being extremely special and "not like other girls". Like literally being the only one who can't have her mind read. - being forcefemmed by Alice so that you can have a tasteful dress and curled hair without sullying your Not-Like-Other-Girls reputation

I love Alice so much in this. if I don't read all the other Twilight books I will at least read all the extracts about Alice and Rosalie's back stories.

The beginning in Forks where she's just vibing and it's raining and there's trees... kind of want a whole book of that.
