I'm still pretty happy with this reboot of Archie...but I wish there was more Jughead stealing the scenes! This book is well illustrated and the story is just fun. This is an easy and just a for fun read. ~Ashley
This book is very cute, clever, and the art is amazing. I really think this would be an engaging book especially with some Norse lore thrown in! ~Ashley
I an not accurately describe how beautiful the illustrations and colors are in this book. Not only that but the author does an extremely good job at showing what is like to be a young kid at school. The main character is filled with creativity, intelligence, and some anxiety. Beautiful, this book is just beautifully draw and written. ~Ashley
It's basically a genius girl meets Clifford the big red dinosaur! It has some really nice character and she acts like her age despite being really smart, and with her new powers kinda match her personality because she's kinda a brute! :P I'm really excited to see what kinda adventures she'll get into when she learns to control them better. and I LOVE how much she looks up to Ms.Marvel, reminds me of a young Ms.Marvel herself. This Really great if you love kids who are very capable, independent, and of course DINOSAURS! ~Ashley
A small girl being cared for by a cursed monster is just as adorable and heartbreaking as you can convey by the cover. I really love the art style completely, the plot and character building is steady throughout this 1st book. They establish the world, relationship between the two characters, and rules very nicely. I have plenty of questions about the mystery but not about how everything works and motivations of the characters.
One of the rules is that the monster can not touch her, because then she would get cursed. This can cause a real sense of danger for this girl. [ There is a scene that was pretty emotional when the girl is chased down and she hurts her leg badly. He can not touch and help carry her back home, so she has to walk on it. And again she has to bandage herself up with only his guidance. (hide spoiler)]
The ending was a bit strange. They introduced a character at the beginning and kinda felt like they threw him in last minute. I kinda wish he was in the background sometime just watching them, then it would make sense that he would show up at his opportune moment.
Really excited for the next one! ~Ashley
This was a very interesting read that has a story within a story format. These two men make a bet that his wife, Cherry, could not be seduced within one hundred nights. He has faith that she will be perfectly faithful because she has not even been with him! That's because Cherry's lover is actually her maid Hero. They are in love and Hero decides that she will tell the guy enough stories that he will be so interested in the stories that he would not be with her. It ends up working and he is loosing track of the days. It doesn't end quite how you think but it in that one hundred nights of story telling they end up causing a revolution and the downfall of a cult meant to keep women down. [The ending got me thinking for a while. So, in this book there was an element of fantasy...and like the moon saved them both. I hate the lesbians always die at the end troupe that is out there so I'm very glad they lived in the stars...but I kinda wanted there to be a separate stories are fantasy and can empower regular people and just reality being reality. Although, it is really cool if wow! The stories are true we can now worship our actual God and the lady that took care of us and not this Birdman guy. Yet, you could also see how the lovers turned into stars because they died. They're not shown again, but can live on forever in the stars...but also their story gets told to the society of stories women and in that way their story gets told on forever and therefore they live on through the story and maybe those stars are dedicated to them because the story tellers have a charm with the stories they tell to remind them...Anyway! Pretty cool..what do you guys think? (hide spoiler)]
The stories were amazing. They were about love and sisterhood and went really well the the charming illustrations. The font how ever, even though it matched the art style at times was hard to read. ~Ashley
Ah! So cute! A little hedgehog wanting to make friends make a friend ship to sail off and find them. Several other animals are also searching and board the ship to find them. Sometimes it's about searching for something that's been in front of you the whole time! ~Ashley
A really compelling memoir about Thi's upbringing and background from her parents who came over from Vietnam. I learned a lot about a time period that I've heard so much about but I never really learned about. It was interesting to hear her parents different backgrounds and struggles. Amazing illustrations are in this book and Thi took a lot of time and care putting this whole book together. ~Ashley
If you have tokophobia I would skip the first chapter and be prepared for non-harsh scenes in this book.
I really wished this was longer because the story feels incredibly choppy, jammed packed with ideas that could be elaborated on, and characters that could use more development. Other wise for this being really short I thought it was fine, I wish they skipped some of the backstory stuff and just made something cute, I would have loved a calm cute story more. Something that really bothers me is they always call the blonde princess fat when in fact she looks about the same size as everyone else...If your going to make her fat do it and she'll still be gorgeous! They just kinda throw it out as an insult to her which I don't really like. ~Ashley
My life style of striving to be cozy always in my house is actually a common practice and even has a name! this is a pretty quick guide to read through with lots of good tips, wishlists, and practices. ~Ashley
This story was ok, the art was really great though! For a first Justice League story I kinda wish they had more of the characters working together. Trying to put the rebirth universe is a little harder to piece together when I never really got into the new 52 series which I think that's where they want to pick it up from a bit. ~Ashley
I'm very interesting to see where this is going to go. They completely sold me in this vol. on Superman being a family man(I really love it, it fits his character so well), super boy is a pretty strong character, and Louis hijacks Batman's hell-bat bot suit of armor to fight a villian.
I'm hoping the next vol. will cover a bit more on superman teaching super boy things about his powers. I'm wondering since super boy is half what kinda powers he will even have. This issue hinted that his powers could be changing or maybe even unreliable?! The story is pretty good, I'm a little more interested on the dynamics of the family and even how the justice league will be in the future. The artwork was really great through out this whole book. ~Ashley
I thought this was a pretty average story, the only thing that really impressed me about it was how much they fit in with it being a one shot story. The art however earned it that extra star, it was really fantastic and has some really creepy aliens. ~Ashley
This book is that old saying of ‘If you love something, let it go.' and it is lovely, charming, and full of feels. The illustrations are lovely and full of expression, the backgrounds are nice and really highlight the character the most. This is a really sweet book which I imagine both kids and adults will really like. I think it will teach kids kindness and have adults think about their children someday leaving the nest and growing on their own. Great book I highly recommend! ~Ashley
I am in love with all the illustrations! The artwork in this is seriously well done and I've re-read it basically just to look at the art work more and the details and thought put into it, for example the deer clothes all have buttons, strings or large neck holes so that it can fit over their antlers. Anyway, this is a story about Santa's reindeer that find a girl named Quincy who is slowly growing antlers herself. I hope to continue this series and if you read this and liked it then I highly recommend Vampire Kisses: Blood Relatives, Vol. 1 ~Ashley

I don't read too many stories on changling or the fey, although it seems to always be a treat because I find gems like this book and Beautiful Darkness by Fabien Vehlmann. This is a really well built world for it being one full volume. You really feel for the characters, both Edmund and the Human Childe are sympathetic characters, there's a bit of a strain on their first meeting and you really feel strongly for both of them. The underground fey-wilde is fantastic and really fun. The colors and illustrations are excellent. Wonderful characters, story pacing, and art makes this a really great read! ~Ashley
This was really great story, interesting concept, and art. It's about a girl who astral projects when she sleeps. You get to see all types of worlds and creatures, when she learns she did harm to one of them she is searching to get back to them to try to help. Her brother who has accidentally gotten himself into trouble with the law, he is running away and is also gifted in engineering. This story is about them traveling and living together while their parents are struggling to make some money elsewhere to send to them. I really am looking forward to picking up the next volume! ~Ashley
If you want some more magic type books then you might want to try Akata Witch
I liked this...but only just liked it. The art is very nice and I'll probably read the next volume that comes out. ~Ashley
Before you read this I recommend you pick up DC Universe: Rebirth, The Deluxe Edition to give you a bit of background of what happened because they do specifically mention the remembering of Wally West in the beginning of this book. (I'm a little confused that there are 2 Wally West's but I'm sure that's something I missed because I didn't pick up many new 52 volumes of any heroes.)
I read the new 52 Flash Vol. 1 and wasn't impressed that the story telling was mostly told through exposition and Barry as a character was lacking...but the art was fantastic! This rebirth Flash vol. 1 has a pretty great story with all the characters you expect and then some, and the art is good. Barry is a great character in this and I really hope they keep that up. Especially with him training some other speedsters and who want to use their powers or just want to continue to lead normal lives without the powers getting in the way. Barry is an excellent hero, a scientist, an officer, and in this he really shines as a teacher. Very nice reveal with Godspeed, honestly it kinda like if Flash was evil. The powers, similar background, just a different view of justice. The writing really brings up flash's frustrations and this villain capitalizes on them...even the ability of being two places at once which seems to be a thing Flash craves the most.
I hope we see Batman and Flash together again sometime soon. There seems to be a theme of giving powers to normal citizens in this Flash it was used to cause some chaos and distress. I'm wondering if the Black Hole bought this tech to connect with the speed force or if they are just a side project the main villain is working on? Also a big hint to Watchmen is this just a nod to different universes or a hint to what is to come? ~Ashley
I love this Bat Girl so much. I've been very impressed with Batgirl, Volume 1: The Batgirl of Burnside series and I'm glad they are continuing with this one. You really take a journey with her as she is visiting Asia to learn some more things about herself including some martial arts. I love the idea of Fruit Bat but I wish they did some more background stuff on her because she's quite the mystery and they just kinda put her in there. She's believable as a wise teacher character with a very similar sounding history to batman. Honestly, with her even getting special training reminds me of batman and now with her having her own company I'm hoping that's where they take her. This book has a lot of characterization on Babs and is a great read.
The couple of things that bother me...
Some characters I think either need more work or not to be there at all. Like, I NEED to know more about fruit bat. Instead of having her in there for a brief moment they could have made the whole book with her instead of this Kai nonsense. A fresh young superhero pairing with a elderly one that has the skill to teach but needs the help would be amazing. I can even imagine her having moments with her family that they have no idea she's still doing hero stuff thinking she's a helpless young lady now vs. her being a hero and teaming up with bat-girl...GIVE ME THAT!
I like the villain in Batgirl, Volume 3: Mindfields because when a character you don't know arrives out of no where that we don't know but Babs claims they were friends as kids comes in you kinda have to take it on her word. Later you find out this out of the blue character is the villain who altered Babs mind and the Villain is actually crashing in our heroes' apartment was really unique and good...Kai is a childhood friend who happens to be the criminal she's after. It's kinda the same formula except bad because Kai is POINTLESS. Who cares about him? Throw him away and bring in Fruit Bat! Seriously, I also feel it's out of character for bat-girl to be I'm suspicious of this dude then I think I'm in love with him. Boo!
The art is good...but I really really really miss Babs Tarr. ~Ashley
I've been thinking about this book even after I finished reading it. This is a story about a mermaid who is the secret main attraction in a aquarium, Her mystery is what keeps the costumers coming back to try and find her. Her closest friend and guardian is an octopus, until a girl spots her and says she is beautiful and makes friends with her quickly. The mermaids friend starts to question why she is treated the way she is and wonders how Neptune does his act. The mermaid has only ever know Neptune as a god so when she finds out he has been manipulating her she questions her freedom and who she can trust. Soon she finds out she has some new legs to stand on and wants to escape. The art in this book is also gorgeous! You really lose yourself when you are reading this story. ~Ashley
This book is really powerful to me because this mermaid was lied to and manipulated all her life, she is trapped in a house aquarium all her life, no one is allowed to see her (only briefly to make money), and this is the only life she's ever know until she makes a connection with a true friend does she start to question her treatment. Neptune is no god and she now is growing more confident and working hard to leave. It's not easy having a controlling figure in your life (especially a parental one) and leaving these toxic and awful relationships can be hard. I really liked this book a lot because it was kinda a fantasy but also metaphorical. The message at the end is very empowering and is why I've been thinking about it so much. Great story and I highly recommend.
This is going to be an important book for kids, not that it's limited adults can easily enjoy this book as well, but for kids with a small world (basically just knowing and meeting people in school and home) I think this book is going to be something they really connect to. Navigating society and relationships are hard especially since you are learning also about yourself. This memoir is very touching and real. The illustrations are cute and very expressive. ~Ashley
A story about the dog who wanted to be a real boy. This book shows life through a dogs perspective who hopes to be human in the next life. Not only do you read about Enzo's life but also his master's. In every stereotypical animal story, Everyone knows that animal stories that the animals life will come to an end. This the animal story is beyond stereotypical. I was wondering after Enzo's death was his end or if he was good enough to get his next human life. You can pick up this material at the colona public library ~Ashley
Enjoyed the art work but not the story. I started reading this and then just skimmed
I was engaged through a majority of this book. This is the first volume of the re-birth and I'm assuming that all the characters are feeling out of place by the universe change and it's written a little confusing. I've only read DC Universe: Rebirth, The Deluxe Edition. I think it's also make references to the new 52 WW comics and I've only read the First Volume. I'll probably check out a few more to see if I can't piece together the whole story a little more. But I like this one a lot more that I liked Wonder Woman, Volume 1: Blood I loved Wonder Woman's new costume design, I like that a majority of the geek story telling is gone, and I like that it had more of a female empowering message. Not only does it tackles a toxic masculinity demon that is defeated by women but also her treatment and respect towards Cheetah. I really liked the strong character they gave WW and the story with Cheetah is what really sold me. The story can get a little fuzzy at times, and I never really dug the idea of Steve Trevor but I think he's here to stay Sigh, but Wonder Woman has a strong character and I super loved Cheetah in this book. The The art in this book is also really great all through the volume they make it dark when it needs to be and all the designs have a lot of care put into it. ~Ashley
