So this has some great things going for it like the art work is pretty charming, the humor is awesome when it hits, and I really like all the characters. It does need some improvement on world building (I think it does a pretty good job just adding it in the story but I hope to see more!) and the story. The story build slowly but surely and then raced at the end leaving me confused. Hope to see another volume of Henchgirl! ~Ashley
I love this book! I really enjoy having kick-butt superheroes that have great character, a story that's action pace, and very well illustrated. This volume Oracle is back...except it's not Barbara. There is another Oracle that is taking the name and Bat girl recruits Black Canary to help her solve the case! They happen to run into Huntress who happens to be following the same trail they are and decide to team up. This volume in particular let's bat girl really gets to shine having to see who has stole her identity. I especially love bat girl's dads (I mean Jim Gordon and her Father Figure she sees in Batman) and the interactions she shared with them, even if they were brief. The characters are spot on, this novel is really fun and action filled. The pacing is really excellent, I read it so quickly because I was captivated. They do a bit of exposition on each character from their history and what has happened in New52 to Rebirth to their characters.
This was such an excellent read. I can't wait to get the next volume. ~Ashley
This is a really strong start to this story. Lottie is a fashion blogger on the internet and everything in her life is pretty superficial and she is also very superficial. She doesn't really have any good friends just some other fashion bloggers that seem to use each others popularity to create a circle of mutual interest. She's shallow and a plastic kinda character that wants something more in her life actually makes for a pretty good read. There is a big mystery going on and her taking a new medicine to cure her allergies (which prevents her nose from running like a faucet) makes her a unreliable narrator, her circle of friends are also unreliable, and her new friend is possibly dead? It's really a pretty good set up and the art in here is absolutely gorgeous! ~Ashley
I suggest YA to adult for this read.
Aaaah, my heart! This book is very sweet and cute. Yaffa and Fatima have different faiths and they are the best of friends and very good neighbors! They are kind and generous to each other. This is a strong book full of friendship and respect. I highly recommend! ~Ashley
This book really confused me and also really intrigued me. The book really didn't get me connected to any of the characters, they immediately jump into throwing them into a different world and throw a bunch of crazy stuff at Allison all at once. I wish i got to know her first, that she loves sailor moon and is a college sorority girl. I kinda hope in the next volume she does become a magic girl and kick demons butts because that would be really cool! Anyway, there is a ton going on and the story telling is really clunky and I'm interested in seeing where it goes. And my goodness that art is fantastic! The world and demons are so cool and creative looking! ~Ashley
When a young girl runs away from home and decides to ride the rails away. She disguises herself as a boy and luckily enough finds a hobo mentor to travel with. The story was ok, the layout was nice, and the coloring was very unique! I actually learned a lot about the hobo lifestyle, very nice to have all the songs and rules cited. It was really interesting to see the meaning of the symbols (and how nicely it was worked in with the title) and I really love the inspired reading list included in the back! I think this was worth the read and I would recommend it to those interested in historical fiction. ~Ashley
I love the art style in this book so much. The story is progressing and the cliffhangers are chilling! Excited to read the next one! ~Ashley
Anyone else notice the two different sides have a mother/father thing going? I'm hope that gets expanded on!
This is...ok? I think some people will like this story a lot more than I do. The art is pretty good though. I wish I was a little more subtle or actually had a lead in to the apocalypse part. This has so much unnecessary dialogue in it that it is repeating itself. Like, What if they just solved mysteries and they're learning the monsters are real and need to discover how...then find out about the lab and the whole transformation nanobot things. That would defiantly be a lot more mystery! Instead they just kinda put you in the middle of it, Go! Right off the bat with crazy monsters!
Daphne's character is ehh?...I don't understand why she has a mystery show and they don't give her much character besides angry.
Fred wouldn't be missed if he wasn't in this vol. at all.
Shaggy seem pretty true character.
Scooby I actually like the smart dog origin story. He still has his character but I like the more vicious bits.
Velma is still brainy..and why is she the only one who gets an origin story?
What in fact is anyone's motivation?! ~Ashley
This is a book I've heard a ton about and read some really great reviews. I read in the back that this is Angie Thomas' first book and she has some real talent. Wow, I was captivated through the whole book. I can't wait to see what she rights next. When I had the free time I would instantly pick up this book, it was always hard to pull myself away. This is about Starr who is a teen girl who is the witness of a murder. She was in the car when her friend was shot and killed by an officer. This is her journey to find justice and to keep living. This book covers some very important issues like police brutality, race, Black Lives Matter movement, and actual teen issues all in one book. This is one of the best books I have read this year. I highly recommend reading this. ~AshleyIf you liked this book you may also like [b:Firekeeper's Daughter 52346471 Firekeeper's Daughter Angeline Boulley https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1595093218l/52346471.SY75.jpg 73690020]
I've recommended this so many times to patrons. Fascinating read, i think I would have preferred it on audio.
I learned a ton from this book. I've never really had money of my own so, when I finally start making it I find myself inexperienced on what to do with it besides trying to live paycheck to paycheck. This book really goes through nicely on all the things that school and parents have failed to teach me about. (Seriously, personal finance should be taught in school!) Anyway, this might be a book I will check out again when I have more of finances in order to read the investing chapters again. Right now, I'm looking into switching saving accounts. Yes, read this book! I highly recommend!
Here is the one beef about the book that I do have is that the millennial lingo will not age well in the future. (At the same time I picked up the book because the title fits me perfectly!) Other than that the chapters are easy to read and all the other info will hold up. ~Ashley
If you haven't seen the Voltron series I highly recommend it! You don't necessarily have to have seen the show to read this but I think it's a little more enjoyable if you have.
Anyway, I'm really impressed with the cool adventures they have in this book, the stellar creature designs(Seriously!), and of course the illustrations and characters are on point! ~Ashley
Taking theater in high school and volunteering with community theater when I was graduated this is basically as magical and mysterious the theater felt to me! There is just something special about being a part of a production, it's a world of it's own that end when the curtain closes but will stick with you forever. (I gave it an extra star for appealing to my thespian nature.) The story is just getting started so it is a little slow. They want to establish the world and characters first. The art work in here is really great and the colors are gorgeous. I'm looking forward to the next issue. ~Ashley
If you liked this I really think you will like Lumberjanes, Vol. 1: Beware the Kitten Holy
This book reminds me of Avatar the Last Air bender, I think it's the one person with all the sands, young friends going to save the day (view spoiler) and when she became a guardian reminded me of when Aang was with a water spirit. It's got some similar vibes going on but its easily it's own thing. The art in this book has a nice style and is beautiful. The pacing of the story is a little quick but they manage to make the world building authentic. In the next issue I'm hoping the characters personalities come out a bit more but very nice start! If you liked this book I recommend you pick up The Stonekeeper ~Ashley
I have really been enjoying this series so far. I like the stubbornness and intelligence of moon girl, plus who doesn't love a giant Dinosaur joining forces with her? The art in here is really wonderful and had some great hero cameos. I liked the other 2 volumes a little better, but I have a feeling that there might be some great character development in store for future issues! ~Ashley
I did not know this was an animated short when I was reading it. So be sure to check that out if you picked up this book. The illustrations were nice, the characters could use a bit more time.
I like the world premise a lot, that a little pig is protecting the town from a evil fog. There is a lot of world to explore here now they are outside the wall I'm interested to see the changes that will come.
~Ashley
This is illustrated so wonderfully! The story is compelling, although a couple of bits I feel like it does some jumps, but easy to pick up again. Really a lot of work went into telling her story about her childhood, sexual harassment/assault, a coming of age and also a coming out. Glad to see she had a supportive cello teacher and found some better balance later in life. I hope to see more from this author, they have a lot of talent! ~Ashley
Still my one of my favorite things in comics right now I'm always excited for the new Ms. Marvel volumes! I really really hope that the voting issue gets spread through the internet when elections come up because it's really incredible and answers FAQ and is educational and inspiring!
The art in this is amazing as always and I really love the internet troll villain in this a lot. It reminds me of cleverbot which was this AI you could talk to and such. The troll basically learned bad behavior on the internet and so to defeat him was being kind to people I thought was kinda funny. It's good to see Ms. Marvel being a gaming nerd but at the same time maybe learning to keep her secret identity under tighter wraps? ~Ashley
I've been moving out of my house into a new one and I've been ordering some storage/de-cluttering books and this one has been the most helpful and inspiring! I've taken some pictures of the folding portions and some quotes. The main idea is that if your items don't spark joy then it's time to get rid of them. There are some other tips in the book too that have really helped me like go through all your stuff by category instead of by room, folding techniques, and very respectful and soulful ideas of how you should view your items. (It seems like Japan has a very unique approach to items, such as the Yokai Tsukumogami or when an item is broken and is repaired by Kintsugi. I really love this and the treatment of much loved items. Really sparks joy!) Some people might find this ideas “far-out” but I think it's just giving your items respect and not being so materialistic.
I haven't read the book. I think the manga really sums it up and adds a couple of characters that you can root for and relate with. I really loved this read and I you happen to be doing some moving or spring cleaning I can't recommend this enough! ~Ashley
A great illustrated book about a boy and his father fishing. This was like reading a memoir about Bao Phi and his early childhood with learning more about his father and his culture from Vietnam. Be sure to read the authors comments at the end. I liked this story but I wish it was a little longer. ~Ashley
There was clear thought and care put into this book. The world is very charming and well thought of and has extended note pages on how certain things work/look. The art style changes depending on who's character's story it is. Also has the bonus of being summer vibes with kids falling into another world, which might be a bit more sinister than it seems!
Yet there still was something that didn't quite grab me and I can't put my finger of what it was? Maybe I was craving more character development or dynamic? I might pick up the next book to see if more of the world, mystery, and fate of these kids. I would highly recommend picking it up.
~Ashley
This book is expressive, colorful, and magical! Based on some Koren folk lore, two siblings are looking for their grandmother and find themselves in a different land! This book is very cute and fun, it has a Alice in Wonderland feel to it. Be sure that you read the back for the folk-lore explanations, translations, and to learn more about the author! ~Ashley
[ As soon as I saw that 9-tailed fox with an old-lady perm I KNEW it was their grandma! What a little fun mystery Julie Kim included in her book! I hope to see more!
I love love love looking at this book and daydreaming about having a cabin to share with my loved ones. The pictures in this book are amazing and my favorite thing about this book is that it include the layout to the cabin. Wow, you really like the particular look of one you could probably make your own! (Maybe someday~) This is a really nice book to look through if you, like myself, daydream about having a nice place to call home. I'm giving it 4 stars because I've only looked at the pictures. I'm sure it's an informative read as well! ~Ashley
There are two Batman/TMNT crossover comics and I only knew about one of them, so this was a surprise! An interesting style with the Batman Animated Series and not a specific TMNT style BUT it is the Nickelodeon version of them. There's nothing too much to say on this, this isn't taken very seriously and I had a really nice time reading it and got a few laughs out of it! I think if you happen to be fans of both series then will probably get the max enjoyment out of it!
