All Our Wrong Todays

I made it to the 15% mark.

Four Doors

Story 2 of 5: not much movement in the 15%, this is one of the areas I look for in the books I enjoy so it wasn't all that difficult to drop the book.

Character 4 of 5: all of the time is spent in the main character's mind and I'm not drawn in by them.

Setting 4 of 5: I'd picked the book because of the crossing time lines concept promoted in the summaries and there is a fair bit in the 15%. I suspect once the story got moving this may have become too complex for me to keep up with.

Language 3 of 5: this is not the door you'd pick this book for. Due to the main character there is quite a bit of bouncing around and the author does a good job of getting back to the story related in the book summary.

The 13 Clocks

Wrote a review for

If there weren't so much dark subject mentioned, I'd buy this for my newborn nephew. The topic is simple, there's alot of rhyming, it's short, and the narrator shows that it's perfect for all kinds of voices for a parent to make while reading this.

You can determine if this is acceptable tots, kindergarteners, or grade school readers.

The Quantum Thief

The story is jumping back-n-forth with no logic, I had to reread the synopsis to figure out how to make sense of this.

On the positive side, this does have some interesting science to contemplate.

Tau Zero

I read this only because I've enjoyed some of the author's other books. I'm normally looking for a story that walks the fine line between plot movement, character building, world building, and the subject the author's is wanting to present for consideration, in the hopes of being drawn in.

I think this book has done most of that except it didn't go far enough in any direction to draw me in. The characters had good beginnings but not much depth, the science would be intriguing if there had been a pinch of something, not sure what, had been added. The only thing I think where it was fleshed out is how human beings would react to being detached from everything that a human being needs to be vibrant, for lack of a better word.

I don't believe I've heard this narrator before; they have an interesting pace to their sentences. I have wondered if that was natural or intended for this book.

Sleeping Giants

The format of the book is very conducive to audio with multiple voice actors. And these actors did a great job of conveying the individual personalities, the sarcasm, the back-n-forth verbal sword play, etc. I laughed alot too.

The subject matter is interesting and it leaves some mystery to keep you interested for more. I'll continue with the series.

Bee Speaker

Wrote a review for

I was so hoping this would be as intriguing as the first book but unfortunately, it was not. I wanted to learn more about the complexity of the bees as hinted at in the first and mentioned in the second but in this book it was really messy. I mean the author has introduced a character that seems to hint at having the qualities of bees but done it in a way that makes you say what the heck is this? Is this an already mentioned but not first perspectived yet? Which one of the several groups presented so far are they part of? Is the author presenting the first person in a new group?

I was ok with not having any of the original team in this book and ok with having 4 new team members but the author has bogged down and seriously muddied the water with massive quantities of internal dialogue, time 4! Just as the forward motion takes off, the internal dialogue begins and bogs it back down. And granted, I was listening to this while driving so I probably missed the announcement at the start of some chapters as to whose perspective was being presented; needless to say I was seriously confused by who was speaking. Even the voice actors didn't help me because I was not able to match a primary voice to a character from the start, let alone their secondary voices for other characters. And not to mention each voice actor's own take on the same character!

I gave up at 44%.

The Romanov Sisters: The Lost Lives of the Daughters of Nicholas and Alexandra

Wrote a review for

I had absolutely no knowledge about the older sisters, which is why I picked up this book, and it definitely fleshes them out in vivid color. The author goes into incredible detail of their entire lives as well as their parents and brother; sometimes I didn't care to hear this level of detail but most of the time, I found it insightful.

I was really surprised at the amount of information the author was able to find because I assumed anything to do with the family would have been burned or destroyed during the revolution. Who knew their home would be kept as a museum the author could walk through? But the author does mention that the mother burned alot of hers and her husband's personal documents before they were arrested and the documents misinterpreted. The author also does refer to alot of second-hand sources that imply alot of primary source information was no longer available.

And I'd heard alot about the relationship between the mother and her spiritual advisor which this book gives a bit more perspective to.

I highly recommend this book.
